The rules do not state whether this is possible or not. As a bid cancels all previous bids, it is my understanding that it is in fact not allowed. But, you can replicate it by bidding 5 slots at 3 bitcoins each and later increasing the bid, which I put you down as.1 slot at 3.5 bitcoin

I had no problem paying either way, just didn't want to see slots go to waste and it's nice to see bidding activity increase

Since you already submitted a bid, I think you're morally obliged to pay it if you win it? That said, if I understand the rules right, you could bit 0.5 BTC on the last slot and get it.
