Seen that new 6870x2? =o Bet some people will jump on that, 400$ for dual Bart core GPU... I mean could be better but if your limited for $ and want a 6870 CF then way to go in a single card for sure.

If you guys are talking about running more than two cards in a rig then the 6990s are a waste of time and fail at being power/cooling/price/density efficient.

i don't think there's any conspiracy going on here ... there are lots of backorders for retailers to fill. When they claim it's now available; it's probably the few remaining after filling the backorders. It's not surprising they are out of stock within minutes.

not surprising ?
all stores in the world within minutes?

i remember the PlayStation3:

"81,639 PS3 systems were sold within 24 hours of its introduction in Japan.
the PS3 was released in North America on Nov. 17, 2006.
Reports of violence surrounding the release of the PS3 include a customer shot, campers robbed at gunpoint, customers shot in a drive-by shooting with BB guns, and 60 campers fighting over 10 systems.
March 23, 2007 ... sold about 600,000 units in its first two days.

In a July 2008 interview, the objective for the PlayStation 3 is to sell 150 million units by its ninth year, surpassing the PlayStation 2's sales of 140 million.

Worldwide:
50 million as of March 29, 2011
A 2009 study by SquareTrade, a warranty provider, found a two-year failure rate of 10% for PlayStation 3s.

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) created a powerful supercomputer by connecting together 1,760 Sony PS3s which include 168 separate graphical processing units and 84 coordinating servers in an parallel array capable of performing 500 trillion floating-point operations per second (500 TFLOPS). The Condor Cluster is one of the top500 largest supercomputers in the world and will enable scientists to better identify objects flying in space."

In Latvia it is available for about $850-900.

links please... phone number, address, store name.

I haven't seen any NEW 6990s at NewEgg since July 4th, and it took less than an hour for them to be sold out.  AMD needs better SCM or something.

it does not make any sense....
two 6970 are cheaper and faster...
But if you have plenty of money to spend and X number of pci slots to fill, why wouldn't you use 6990s? If someone is actually building a mining operation that is around ~10,000 cards big, that means they probably have some substantial financial backing. They are probably going to need space to house and cool at least 2500 rigs (assuming 4 cards per mobo). So in a situation like that, your 'hashing power per square foot' becomes a bigger and bigger factor.

Your overhead costs would be much higher to house and AC the same amount of hash power using 6970s as opposed to 6990s. So even though the initial cost per mhash is higher on a 6990 compared to dual 6970s, the 6990s would be much more efficient to mine with in the long run. Overhead cost per mhash is often more important to consider than purchase cost per mhash, you only buy the card once but you pay money to run it every second after that.

I would definitely prefer the 6970s, but that is just based off of my current situation.

Okey Dokey Lokey
Dual 6870's are "nice" but you can have that in one slot rather than two

Hum... You're right. I didn't notice that it was a reservation. 6990 is probably equipped with alien technology and the government wants to destroy them all.
