just opened my wallet for first time since last year.  It said warning please update before October of 2015.  Ha, I take it that means I'm holding dead coins?  What a racket that would be.  I thought the point of investing in blockchains was immutability?

Please someone tell me my coins are still valid.  How would I know if they were valid or not

Your coins are perfectly fine.  Just download the latest wallet and your good to go.

What is happening with this coin ?

The start of a rally.  Years of flawless, fast, and secure PoS block-chain, will catch consumer's attention eventually.

Is there a smart contract project for Blackcoin?

Not sure why noone replied to this, but fairly well known is David Zimbeck's BlackHalo double-deposit escrow smart contracting system using BlackCoin which has been alive and working longer than Ethereum has existed:

http://blackhalo.info

As for adapting the core protocol itself for smart contracting, I don't believe that is something actively in development.

i would luv to learn how you do it ( not just compile - but actually package as rpm ) - as i have a few packages id like to incorporate - and will be happy to get a repo sorted if it pans out - for the fedora / rhel based distros ...

lets chat if you are willing to work on it ...

The packages were built mainly using the official RPM creation howto, somewhat referencing spec of Bitcoin packages, though they are much simpler (in particular, SELinux is not involved). I’ve done the packages for BlackCoin to support it and because I use them myself, but I’m not a RPM packaging expert and will probably not be interested in packaging other cryptocurrencies.

no problem ...

no harm in asking - and i received your answer ...

it is appreciated though that you have setup such a 'service' as rpm packaging for blk ...

i have been a long term miner / holder of blk and like to see these sorts of things happen ...

im still interested in putting a repo together - but its useless if the only thing in the repo is one package ...

tanx for your reply - and links ... i actually use the liberty bell packages also for btc ...
