Considering that when bitcoin came out there wasn't a team of miners ready to jump on it on day zero, you need to make an adjustment to avoid stupendous failure. We'll end up making a mockery of the expected block time at launch. Difficulty targeting interval either needs lowered altogether or put on some scale to ease it in over the first week.
