So what was with the price jump and fall again overnight? Any attributable reasons?

A combination of multipool switching, miner switching, and a particular holder of many cats on Cryptsy.

Yeah I had all my rigs pointed at Middlecoin recently and DOGE as a backup pool. Well Middlecoin kept interrupting connection so much that I mined 100k Doge and held the top hash spot on doge.luckyminers! So something has definitely been happening with the middlecoin algo. Maybe the fast coin switching was knocking me off and keeping me off since the cgminer --failover-only command seems to want 5 minutes of stability in on pool 0 before returning to it.

Point those rigs at CAT!  Grin

Well I just asked middlecoin admin for this favor to hold off mining catcoin for the next couple of days while we rebuild support and hashrate.
I'll report back with the decision!

Middlecoin has recently been switching coins a lot faster than instant profitability would dictate. I have some miners there and did see diffs indicating CAT for a few minutes this morning, but it seems to bouncing between LTC, WDC, and FTC.

Based on the coin switch speed either the switching algo has a bug or the pool operator is intentionally trying to spread that 10 GH/s around to avoid breaking smaller coins (using coin switching as a kind of pulse-width modulator).

Well one of the big multipools agreed to leave CATcoin alone maybe we can ask the others? Like middlecoin and hashcows to leave us be for 3 days or something? Maybe they can find it in their hearts!  Kiss

Hashcows agreed to leave CAT alone for a few days, I don't think Middlecoin has even been contacted yet though.

Besides I doubt Middlecoin would leave us alone.

This is the fundamental problem that the fork didn't fix: until there is enough constant hash to make the effect minimal, multipools are going to cause huge difficulty swings by jumping in when the difficulty is low, mining out all the blocks, pushing the diff up, and jumping out. We only have to mine 36 blocks now to get through the high diff, but we don't get many of the easy ones for all that work.

Until the net hashrate is too big for a multipool to significantly effect (which means 20+ GH/s), the difficulty NEEDS to depend on more than just the last 36 blocks. The 36 block retarget is great, but the new difficulty should be calculated from the last 2016 block times so that fast 4x diff swings dont happen.

Well from what I read in the Middlecoin thread, apparently they are focusing on LTC and such for now, because they realize that it's screwing over the smaller Altcoins. At least that's the impression I got, as people were asking why it wasn't mining the more profitable Altcoins instead of LTC.

If correct, and Hashcows keep to their word, we should have a smoother ride, at least for a few days.

Not much point going on about changing the difficulty retarget mechanics yet again, even the most optimistic traders and miners would likely bail at the mere mention of another fork. At this point we have to deal with what we've been dealt.

Nethash is correct in the client and on the pools. The webpage still seems to disagree with everything else. I'm showing almost 300 Mhash on the network, up from 150 3 days ago. We still need a lot more hash. I'm making $75/day right now with just 3 Mhash. Not too shabby, I doubt any coin but lotto is that profitable currently.

wut ? $75/day from cat with 3MH ? WUT ?

The diff briefly dropped to 24, maybe he got luck on those blocks.

Nobody got luck, Hashcows took 850 of 1800 coins in that retarget. I've earned 150 coins in the last 2 days, so either teamcatcoin (which has a measly 25 Mhash) is SUPER lucky, or people are grossly underestimating the profitability of CAT right now. I'm gonna go with the latter. This is especially true once the next retarget hits in 14 blocks. YOu know where to point your miners Wink

CAT lovers are only good to hold on transactions during unprofitably diffi. Profitable diffi get catched by the cow and dumped to BTC

Not anymore. Cows has agreed to hold off for a few days while we build up our hash rate to prevent such drastic oscillations in diff. See my post a couple pages back for a quote from nearmiss, the admin of HC directly.

Edit: I'm retarded. $37.50 per day. Either way still 200% of litecoin. Forgive me kitties, I have not had my coffee yet.

Must be 150-170 CAT/day @ 3mh/s  -  impossible

with a bit luck you only get 30 CAT

More than half of the blocks at last diffi 24 were catched by a single big pool that exclusivly exchages coins ans payouts directly in BTC
