You'll probably want to use an asic to mine this coin as it is sha256. The same as Bitcoin. So there's a lot of hashrate out there for this specific algorithm. With that being said, i'm using an old antminer s3, and i've found tons of blocks already. So, you can try giving sgminer a shot to mine sha 256 and see what you can do with it. Just point it at stratum+tcp://altmining.org:3044 with the username as your wallet address and the password can be anything.

Came the first payment! Yay! All is well. As for the old coins that was mined in the pool, I guess the developers of the coin were liars.
You probably didn't meet the minimum payment threshhold. Depending on what coin it was, the pool operator could go in and manually send payments out to everyone that's do. I usually do this if pow ends on a coin that I have on my pool. That way even people that didn't meet the minimum will get their coins.
