This is interesting, I didn't know that MasterNodes could be auction off I thought you just loaded up your wallet with the requisite amount of coins and off you go earning interest.
Even though ASIC's are eating up the Skein (and other algo) market not everyone can afford an ASIC which still make GPU mining a viable option.

Why pick Skein which is asic friendly algo - its unminable on GFX before block 1000 - all the asic owners just rushing to early mine, already hashrate trough the roof
I had research brought to me that showed Skein is more profitable than some slightly more ASIC-resistant options that we were considering. Also, they presented evidence of successful coin execution vs some of those other ones.
x17 would have been the way to go as it also consumes less energy. These Skein ASIC miners have a lot of muscle power even though the devices are very expensive.
