I didn't see any mention of PoS or master nodes or escrow nodes. How are they going to do smart contracts and escrow without a robust network of dedicated nodes? Miners will run away once another coin offers better ROI - and for a chain that offers actual and sustained utility and services tacked on, a sudden drop in mining power could be a disaster.

Or am I wrong?

You have raised very valid and critical point. Critical services can't wait if hash power drops or so, We are already in discussion and have plans for this situation.
You are more than welcome to join forum https://forum.dero.io/  for more discussion.

While you make an interesting point - many miners will stop mining if a more profitable coin comes along - it kind of fails the reality check as of now. Ethereum & Monero don't have PoS or masternodes and yet the hashrate on their networks is very robust (even after XMR hard forked to block ASICs).

Granted, ETH is still threatening to transition to PoS, and maybe allotting some of the block reward to stakers will eventually prove to be necessary, but as of now it doesn't seem to be the case.

This looks like an interesting coin with some potential so I've setup a mining pool for it to help secure the block chain by creating a node.  Hopefully some of you will join me mining this one on our pool so that we can get some of the hash power spread around.

The pool is compatible with nice hash for now in case you want to rent some hashing power.  We found a block yesterday before the fork and have updated the pool binaries with the latest release.

The front end is just the basic front end for now but we will start to build on it.

If you have any questions feel free to send them to me at [email protected].

Thanks!

How to start using Dero                Downloads                Whitepaper                Support

About DERO

The Dero Project has written a unique new blockchain technology that is based on the CryptoNote protocol. Dero's goal is to create a unique state of the art blockchain technology with enhanced reliability, privacy, security, usability, and portability by bringing together some of the best proven technologies like the CryptoNote protocol and smart contracts, thereby allowing for the creation of truly private smart contracts.

The Dero development team has implemented complete SSL across the Dero network which is a first on any blockchain. This encrypts the entirety of our network traffic, which greatly reduces our attack surface, while simultaneously preventing ISPs or other users from analyzing Dero’s network traffic.

Dero's Key Features

  • DERO is a completely new and unique CryptoNote blockchain written in Golang
  • DERO is the first blockchain to have complete SSL in the P2P layer
  • DERO will be the first CryptoNote blockchain to have 500 transactions per second on its native blockchain without any lightning networks, validators or off-blockchain solutions
  • DERO will be first CryptoNote blockchain to have smart contracts on its native chain without any extra layers or secondary blockchains
  • CryptoNote privacy
  • Smart contracts
  • Atomic swaps
  • Mobile and offline wallets
  • Lightweight wallets
  • Subaddresses
  • Escrow services on the blockchain
  • Address signing and certifying
  • Voting on a private blockchain

About The Developers

There are three developers working on the Dero Project who have been working in the field of cryptography and blockchain development as a team for more than a decade. Dero's research and development team are devoted full time to the project, and can often be found in our Slack channel. For now, the development team are choosing to retain their privacy until the Dero Project incorporates.

Coin Specifications

  • Proof-of-work (PoW) algorithm: CryptoNight
  • Max supply: 18.4 million for the first 8 years followed by an infinite emission rate after year 8 of ~157,000 DERO/year
  • Block reward: Smoothly varying
  • Block time: 120 seconds
  • Difficulty: Retargets at every block
  • Ticker: DERO

Dero's Roadmap

  • Q1/2018 - Dero's new unique blockchain written and full Activation. - Completed ahead of schedule with the extra addition of complete SSL across Dero's network
  • Q2/2018 - Record CryptoNote TX/sec, GUI wallets, sub addresses, atomic swaps, and smart contract testing.
  • Q3/2018 - Smart contract support on chain. Q3 2018.
  • Q4/2018 - Strategic market expansion, team growth, and more (coming soon).

Asic miners do not sell coins cheaply.
Surprisingly.
Official pool miners seemed to sell coins very cheaply.
I think it's still very cheap.

they should really reconsider waiting a month to HF for anti asic... again Im shocked ! I thought the POW change would happen with this update.

Many (including me) tried to tell them. Didn't worked.

it is ASIC friendly  Cheesy

Thank to ASIC pumpers, old miners enjoy the recent crazy price.
Not sure devs will change the POW or not. I think if no one pumps the DERO anymore, they will do the hardfork.

There's a lot more happening than just a PoW change.

I'm really shocked they didn't go anti asic the network is getting abused they will amass and large number of coins and dump.. waiting 1 month to HF seem like a bad move..

I think it will be like with graft. Just a time lag about a month. Those powers that were there now are here ...  I'll be back in a month. After update.

Your version shows 1.0.4-alpha.12+30042018 . Latest is 1.0.4-alpha.14+30042018 , Difference of two updates.

That partially explains things. What isn't explained is how I would know this given that I just downloaded the new wallet package from your link about 1.5 hours ago?

EDIT - Clearly I should have read what you typed more carefully, but I think it was eminently reasonable to assume that I had the current wallet package when I had downloaded it *after* the hard fork had already happened. You have a habit of being overly terse, CaptDero, and sometimes using a few more words preemptively can spare a lot of wasted words/time later on. Like merely saying something along the lines of, "there have been 2 more updates since the hard fork was announced," would have prompted me to d/l the wallet package again, rather than assume I had the current version (which also led me to think you were being extremely obtuse when you kept asking what for all the world looked like Really Stupid Questions).

Yeah, I did that, which is why I quoted your previous post.

EDIT - I just closed and reopened the daemon to confirm this behavior persists and that I am running the correct version; yes to both.

Can you confirm the Latest Version 1.0.4-alpha.14+30042018
Use version command.

I literally just did that in anticipation of your request hence the edit to my previous post. But just to forestall any further argument I did it yet again using the version command in the daemon and it says 1.0.4-alpha.12+30042018.

I hate to be overly redundant here, but it seems necessary to point out for the 3rd time that I followed your directions precisely and the daemon is stuck, anyway. Oh, and yes, I am running it as an administrator. One other datum that may or may not be relevant: I did not delete the existing blockchain files, but you didn't say we needed to.

Everyone Pls update to latest DERO daemon:
Download from http://seeds.dero.io/alpha/
Version v1.0.4-alpha.12+30042018
HardFork block Height 68600 (~2 hrs from now)

Pool operators must sync time also from ntp:
apt install ntpdate
ntpdate -s us.pool.ntp.org

It increases NW security.

Is the daemon supposed to stall at 68600 while the network block height is at 68637 and climbing?

EDIT 2 - nope, network block height just incremented to 68638.
