I have to agree,  1 min block times does not sound like a good idea.

Every coin has growing pains.  Changing the fundamental base of the coin without really good reasons is a mistake IMO.  If difficulty is high, we just need to wait it out.  If users believe in this coin, they can support it by mining it.  If you want the your transactions to confirm, mine them.

That being said ....  is anyone mining this anymore?  I'm feeling alone out here but that is how it is mining solo.

difficulty : 3.07812949 does not sound so hard.  No block for ~16 hrs on the network is a problem.

Woah, wtf...
If anyone can assist or point me in the right direction...

Have sent the coins to an exchange, well tried to. Wallet is out of sync (v8.2.1) and coins have not appeared on cryptsy. Been 16+ hours.

Update to 0.8.3.1 in the meantime.

That doesn't fix the problem, unfortunately. I am running that and redownloaded the blockchain... still stuck...

Nice and thanks to you and shakezula! Does this require redownloading the whole blockchain again?

It may be advisable to redownload the blockchain as a precautionary measure.

...

I have decided that the best course of action is to:

  • Lower the block target to 1 minute blocks.
  • Bring down the block subsidy to 400 GME in line with the reduction to the block spacing.
  • Have difficulty retargets at 2 block intervals.
  • Make it so that the maximum difficulty swing is 110%

This change is now due to come in as of block 64,000.

NOTE: This change does have one side effect. As the subsidy halving occurs at 840,000 block intervals we should reach this block in ~1.6 years instead of 4 as per the original design. This will have the effect of lowering the overall coin generation to ~705 million over the lifetime of the coin.

This sounds great ! Thank you !

OK, do we have a new windows wallet avail for download? 8.2.1 is the latest I can grab...

There was a bit of an underestimation in exactly how fast we would reach the designated block due to us being stranded at such a high difficulty for so long so I was unable to get everything in place in time before we hit it. As a result I've had to move the hard fork to block 64,000, checkpoint the original fork mined by the older clients and bring out a further version to allow everyone ample chance to update.

The Windows QT in the first post is updated to v0.8.3.1 (thanks to shakezula).

As to what this changes:

In our recent troubles it became apparent that a combination of block targets of 2.5 minutes, a maximum difficulty swing of 400% and retargets every 48 blocks is just not sufficient to maintain a strong and steady network. The difficulty invariably ends up like a roller coaster ride going from one extreme to the other with nothing inbetween.

Shame there is the still existing visual sync issue. For anyone that has their client say "out of sync" and requires something like 350k more blocks to be downloaded. Just ignore it. It's a residing effect from the previously mentioned initial attack on the coin. The client is able to see the unofficial blocks but it will not download them due to checkpoints. Because of this you will end up with a visual discrepancy saying that your wallet is out of sync, all the while it is synced and fully functional.

I was really hoping the change to the IRC channel would resolve this but I guess it's just not sufficient to just change the channel. Although the rogue peers are not connecting to it we are all connecting to each other and telling each other about clients we know about, such is the nature of p2p.

I'm going to have to look more closely at the code and see if I can get it to automatically add a banscore of 100 to clients not named as "GameCoin" going forward.

As ruecanonrails points out it's merely an annoyance to see your client trying to sync. Your wallet will not download anything other than the official blockchain, at least up to the last block that has a checkpoint (48,500).

Is it maybe somehow the case that you lot do not know of the handshake bytes that coins use to prevent them from connecting to clients that are actually of other coins?

If you are using the same magic bytes that identify some other coin, instead of using new unique sequence of magic bytes that uniquely identify your clients, then that is why other coin clients are still able to connect to you. Basically your client is deliberately pretending to be one of their clients.
