having it start mining (by default) before loading the wallet is a bad idea, not only if you just want to send funds and the time it takes to startup but any blocks found will be orphaned when the client finally syncs (happened to me)

so what do you suggest on doing?

start it, while mining is disabled.
let it synchronize first.
Than restart it while mining is enabled

still only see 1 core being used Sad

You'll only see 1 core being used while it is initializing - and that might be taking a while.

can you put this on the git?

I've put it here -
https://github.com/memorycoin/memorycoin/tree/multithread

I'm still learning how to use Git so it's on a tree.

still only see 1 core being used Sad

it's worse than that, it looks like I also cannot contact the server when this is running in daemon mode.

note:  this is on Linux

Did you redo the addnode step(s) or are the nodes in your memorycoin.conf?

OK - with the default settings I can see all the cores being used, but fluctuating 89-97%. Is this right?

I'm seeing full 100% usage on my quad core with a slight dip each time a new block is found. Not sure why you'd be getting less than that, but sounds like you're getting 95% usage which is nearly full.

All my 4 cores are 100% stressed out. Works great at first sight

The multicore version does not open for me. It keeps loading the blockindex and freezes there

It's slow to open because the hashes are slow. I need to look at speeding this up, but for now it just a (very) slow startup.

I notice that start.bat has the arguement 'gen=1'. Should this be 'gen=-1' to use all cores?

No, gen=1 will setgenerate to true. It'll use all your cores by default.

Are you posting these changes on the github?

Genproclimit should be -1 to use all cores. But this coin only uses 1 core

For me still no connection to any node.

no connection = no blockchain = no mining

added all mentioned nodes, installed qt revision 3
So I'm in the dark here

Try the new multicore version - it adds some nodes in the start.bat.

Also try opening port 8555 on your router. I'm working on uPnP but it may take a while.
