The plan is to create DOGE wallet first to show community that it can be build first. Then next step is to try to find funding. Third step is to start implementation for all other coins.
The DOGE wallet is more or less working. Still working on it, tuning it though.

Is this project still active? I think the effort is worth it, especially if it is developed in the open by voluntary contributors.

Didn't mean to start religious wars, I just hate inconsistent gui. Take a look at multibit. What's that ? swing? I won't complain as long as the app has native look and I don't have to take a piss while it reacts to a mouse event...

absolutely, if I knew how to code, I would have done this.
I was contemplating even a simple 'batch file' to do this.
1 GUI, multiple wallets, simple switching between wallets.

I think seriously about starting development of MultiCoin wallet. Solving funding issue now. I think seriously about creation of funding project on bitcoinstarter.com or similar site to help with funding of this project.
Thinking whether it would not be good to create some introductory video to help with funding on bitcoinstarter.com or similar site to attract people and explain the features. Would somebody here who could help?

Yes, that is considered. It needs to be useful and easily extendable.
If this is possible, make it easy for new devs to be able to add their new alt coins in this wallet as well

I think you should look at volume rather than market cap. Coins with large market cap but negligible volume are usually scams, see Quarkcoin and Megacoin.
