The newer source causes a hard fork at block 243759, which quietly ignores (invalidates) 36976 blocks of the above 280735 block chain. These 36976 blocks were mined months or even years before the newer source was released. The negative adjustment represents about 13% of the total blockchain so it's not exactly a small amount.
