Yes, someone should estimate out how much energy burst would use for the same capital outlay currently protecting bitcoin.  I estimated recently that it would take about $100M to 51% the bitcoin blockchain.  How much drive space would that take, and how much energy would that many drives mining burst demand?  I've read similar estimates for bitcoin (e.g., mining results in about half a million tonnes of greenhouse gases being dumped into the atmosphere each year), so that part is already done.

u can buy ASIC for $100 M , plug and play.

for burst, u have to buy CPU , RAM.

After u got all those, u have to plot ur HDD.

Plotting PB of data and making sure all of them work and keep pace of replacing fail HDD. Good luck with that.

When u get a very big farm for burst , u might have to hire a full time person to actually help replace fail HDD every now and then. When u replace ur fail HDD , u have to plot again.

After u finish plotting all ur fail HDD , u have another batch coming ur way.

Is it easy to 51% burst ?

I don't think so because u will be busy running around playing with HDD. U have no time for 51%

Maybe the question would be.

How much HDD can u buy with $ 1 million and that amount of HDD how much time is needed to plot them. With 1 million dollars worth of HDD, how many rig u need and how much time is needed to set up $ 1 M worth of HDD ? i think it might take months.

Not to mention that block reward reduce by 5% every month.
one million dollar can buy 12-15 pb space depending on the infastructure. running costs about 500$ a day.
so the current 7-8 pb networksize would roughly cost 500.000$ and 250$ a day.
on this scale plotting can be done on the storagenodes themselve and maybe a bit speeded up with some gpu plotters within 1-2 weeks after deployment.

Good points. Do we have any data/statistics on the failure rate mining Burst 24-7 yet?  maybe 1 per 10 hd death per month, less or more? Any HD experts?

I'm curious of the wear and tear,. seems minimal,. but current gen platter HDs,... ?

I don't see any reason so far to think that Tim would trade in bad faith.

Nah, he wouldn't trade in bad faith, i'm sure... But every time I looked at the computer with those drives, I would want to tell it to shut the fuck up. haha.

why i am so eager to support development of this coin is because i am so bored with hundreds of copy-cat so called innovative coin, with their new PoW algorithm, annon feature, proof-of-stake, some use funky name, some even have VOIP feature put into their wallet (which make me laugh) in desperate to give innovation, even we have dedicated callendar for coin launch, and everyday there is new coin launch! what a crazy world

The specifics need work, and it is admittedly rough.  I had to do a lot of work to actually mine this, and because of very poor error condition checking, I was successfully mining while thinking I wasn't.  I had almost completely given up.

I had to do a lot of work to make the miners, plotters, etc work.

But the reason I did it, is exactly what uray said above.  This one is worth paying attention to, because it democratizes mining.  ANYONE can mine.  Drive space is cheap.  It consumes almost zero power.  People can do it for fun.  It's the first real green alternative to the monstrous, megawatt driven industry of bitcoin mining.

Got a better idea for you:
5TB external ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=22-178-587 ) with promo code EMCPAHH222 today only brings price down to $160USD each. 2x of them = $320 for 10TB instead of timk's $340 for 9TB.

Thanks!  Tim's deal is actually for 12TB, but the higer density is worth the premium.

I want everyone to know that this guy has been PMing me wanting to buy my drives for $320 but he won't come up to $340.  And he wants my plots and user id and password, etc.  Cheap ass.

Actually, the intention in my latest offer was to buy them through ebay at the listed price of $340.  The extra conditions were to make it worth my while to hand the extra money over to ebay, since they'll give you less than the $320 in escrowed bitcoin I originally offered.

We will get there, the community behind this coin is GREAT. The DEV is great, all of the other devs are GREAT! There is only a simple matter of time, before this coin is as well-known as LTC, and worth a fantastic amount.

I for one, will continue to hold my burst and buy more and more until I can't anymore. I want to hold 20 million by Jan. This coin is THE only new coin worth watching IMO.

20 mill! Wow! I don't think I'm that rich Wink!!!

ANNOUNCEMENT:

I have stopped mining this piece of shit crapcoin.  I hadn't had a payout for DAYS with 10.43 TB of disk space pimping away, I was tired of the piece of crap Java miner hogging 9 GB of ram for two instances of mining, I'm tired of the developers' half-assed miner and having to do half the programming work just to compile and run the damn thing.

My 4 3TB Seagate Barracuda hard drives are on ebay right now for a VERY fair $340 and free shipping in the USA.

Furthermore, I predict that this crapcoin will never see 500 satoshis again.  Anyone who tries to talk it up by saying things like "to da mooooooon", is a fool, an idiot, and a moron.

So screw this crapcoin and everything about it.

Basically whe you say screw everything about this coin you are telling us all to f*ck off...
Thats not very nice of you.

I have been mining and minting and whatnot more than 30 altcoins the last half year, and nowhere have i seen more competent developers and a more productive main developer but here. I am staying. I don't mind other ppl leaving cause that means my plots generate more coins. In the long run this one will be one of the main altcoins, in fact, it already is, only not so many have found out yet.

My 20TB will be shipped on the 24th and will be operational a few days after that. I would really love a price crash and some of the more childish people leave, cause that will leave more burst to be had by the ones who are in for the long haul. Looking back at how short a period of time this coin has been live, the innovation and the development (and the quality of software developed) is lots higher than what i see in the  professional software development world. I surely hope the dev team behind this coin like good beer, cause there might just one day happen to drop a large box of said liquind on their doorstep. (not now... down the line..)

BTW seagate barracuda disks (at least the 3TB version) are  extremely crappy by my experience. i've had two of these crash in short order, while all my other 3TB drives have been working flawlessly. I hope for seagate that they've gotten their shit together reg. their 4tb drives.

It's amazing to see how many ppl are actively contributing to the coin and the software. Cheers to every one of you.. it is very much appreciated.

+1 i've been mining hundreds of altcoins since a year or two, even i did mining bitcoin using CPU, when the price is still like 0.1$ / btc, and NO... i am not rich.. i loss all those easy earned bitcoin on satoshi dice!, the moral of the story is... its so easy to overlooked great innovation when the price is very very low, i don't ever thinking twice when i put 5 BTC bet on satoshidice a long time ago, cause its just 0.5$ !, now we see most people so easy dumping thousands of burst at the price of < 100 sats ...

why i am so eager to support development of this coin is because i am so bored with hundreds of copy-cat so called innovative coin, with their new PoW algorithm, annon feature, proof-of-stake, some use funky name, some even have VOIP feature put into their wallet (which make me laugh) in desperate to give innovation, even we have dedicated callendar for coin launch, and everyday there is new coin launch! what a crazy world

burst giving a fresh breath to crypto world, not only its greener to run than bitcoin, litecoin and other alts, burst also more asic resistance since it does not rely on computation, and also burst is free from Proof of stake flaw of rich getting richer, its better distributed since harddrive is easier to get and maintain than GPU or ASIC, and also its free from CPU-coins flaw that can be abused by bot-net or any infected PCs. day by day network capacity is increasing, we almost have 9 Peta Bytes now, that's great network infrastructure if we can utilize it better.

there are lot of potential, we still have a lot to do, we are talking too much about technical side of mining, and less commercial and social, we need to build better and bigger community for this coins

The highest level i have seen since till day 1.

Yes, and people keep whining and dumping at current price. I'm excited what would people say when we reach 10Petabytes.
