The point is we don't want a computer noob to have a masternode.
And we don't want it to be cheap. It's supposed to be expensive. And it looks like it's a good call.

Yes, but wouldn't a future currency be easily accessible to even the most basic of script kitties?

Sorry, I totally don't understand this question.  I also disagree with tombtc in that it's dang easy to set up a masternode and there are tons of people willing to help newbies here.

And still there are many people who cannot do that. If you are not able to setup a node using a guide then what is the point to make that even more easier. For the health of the network running a masternode should require at least some skills.

Yes, but if setting up a masternode only exist in the hands of the few then we have the same problem as the banks. Not anyone can open up a bank.

You don't get it. The currency should be available to everyone. Running a masternode - not.

Now how do you feel about decentralization? If setting up a MN is difficult or expensive how many people have them? Does decentralization bother you?

With over 2000 masternodes running now, it's hardly centralized, plus that is only half the function of the network.  We still have miners and our difficulty is high, so no fear there.

As for difficulty, if I can do this, and there must be 20+ tutorials out there, anyone can do it!  Seriously, it's not hard!

Finally, DDOS attacks are when malicious people swarm your ip addresses with requests, like download requests, etc... until you bandwidth is overwhelmed and your internet is shut down (for all intent and purposes)  Big sites have to deal with this all the time.  It will help when IP obfuscation is implemented with the MN network.

Is that implementation expected to happen soon?

It is already something that some coins can piggybag of Darkcoins development and innovations. Do you really now also need the best Bitcoin talk thread to support you copy clone efforts? Pathetic.... You can be an inventor world changer or a follower a cloner... Now let's get back to the one and only original Darkcoin.

This is not a noticeboard for your coin.

Never said it was. I am an investor. I want to invest in the future. DRK has great technology and SPR is trying to push it further. I am simply trying to decide where to put a vast majority of my eggs.

Is there a plan to make setting up a masternode easy on your personal computer? I have heard that it is not suggested.

Edit: I must confess that I do like how SPRs masternodes are setup. Is Evan planning to implement a similar program in wallet?  Or is there one already, I haven't updated my wallet in some time.

We want the MasterNodes to be online with a stable internet access.  I think they get dropped after ... I don't recall, but by an hour, if wallet doesn't ping, it is dropped off the network.  A Masternode can be run at home, just like anywhere else, and now someone has managed to run one on a raspberry pi 2 model B.  But if you don't have a stable IP address and your provider changes it, you drop off the network.  But if you keep an eye on it, or if like me, your ip address changes very seldom (like only when there is an issue and it's reset) you could do it at home.  I find that making sure my box is running properly (which it often isn't) and the electricity cost makes it not worth it.  Servers only cost about 5-8 dollars a month and are way more stable than what I have at home.

Now Mr. Spread claims that a masternode can be run with an everchanging IP address. Does that seem feasible?

Also how much data is needed to run a masternode? If you are running it on your own internet connection.

Sure it can be done.  using a domain name can be done as well, so you can use no-ip.  But do we want people running masternodes, and getting paid by the network if they're running a flimsy system?  No.  I don't think we can stop people from doing this at home, but I won't 'cause it's too expensive.  If it turns out the rpi runs it super well, I may very well just run mine on an rpi, who knows?  No reason not to if it's able to do the work required.  Only thing is, I can't play with it once it arrives, and I probably won't be able to have it sit there running a masternode while I stare at it wishing I could try stuff out, LOL.

Oh, and sorry, I don't know what bandwidth it uses per month... sorry.  At the moment you need at least 8gb to hold the block chain, I'd say 10 gb minimum now.

Because you don't keep your coins there. They can hack the remote server and will not steal your coins.

Are you saying that someone can hack a masternode if it's in wallet?

Any wallet can be hacked.  It's easier to find if constantly online.  A good passphrase should protect it, but a wallet that is 90% of the time in cold storage and has a good passphrase is way less at risk, even if the risk is small.  But if you're like me, and everything you have that resembles money is tied up in your two masternodes, they mean the world to you, and you want the most protection possible.  Some people don't like the hassle and feel the risk is so minimal that they run hot wallets.  It's whatever or wherever you comfort zone is Smiley

So would it be better to run a masternode on your personal computer or on a server in your opinion?

If you want consistently dodgy connections, maybe

Well SPR is running in testnet right now and I have 50 MN connections setup with unnoticeable interruption. I'm wondering how a DRK masternode would compare to this.
