Primecoin and Quarkcoin were released in a similar manner, only the wallets were available. Look where they are now. 
Then again Qubit recently launched with a standalone miner included, which is convenient and fast for sure.

From what I can see, there was much original work done on this coin... Many new algos I am not aware have been used before, look at this!
