DOGE is one of the safer bets in my experience - most other coins I trade with have dropped heavily in terms of BTC

This is normal, because if bitcoin goes down then other altcoins will rise. bitcoin drops only affects the USD exchange rate on the altcoin and does not affect the altcoin exchange rate to bitcoin itself.
