@worth and ursay

I really appreciate that you went into so much detail for somebody that isn't a contributor (yet) to the forum. This is very helpful information. Thank you!

I am trying to educate myself as I am just discovering the power of cryptocurrency and the blockchain.

This particular coin seems to show some promise with the projects that are being developed around it.

Thanks again.   Smiley

Newbie (new to bitcoin and alt) here-

I have started accumulating florincoin. I  have downloaded my coins to my desktop wallet.
What are my options to back up the wallet? Is a regular macintosh time capsule backup sufficient?

Are there any other wallet options worth considering?

Thank you all for this great thread!

You'll want to show all files on Mac OS like this link explains...
http://ianlunn.co.uk/articles/quickly-showhide-hidden-files-mac-os-x-mavericks/

Then navigate to System/Users/Your username/Library/Application Support/florincoin/wallet.dat

The wallet.dat is what you want to protect and backup.

I don't suggest revealing hidden files on your Mac. It's overly complex for most people and can potentially lead to people losing files that are important (which is why they're hidden in the first place).

There are a couple of easier ways to do this. One is to just use the Backup Wallet feature built right into most QT or Core based wallets in the File menu.  I demo it in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JNBD5RN-pM

Or you can easily get to the hidden folder containing the wallet.dat file by going to the Go menu in the Finder, which will give you a list of commonly accessed folders.

While the menu is open, hold down the Option key and a new item Library will appear about half-way down the menu. Click this and look for Application Support in the window that opens. Inside of that, look for Florincoin and either back up that entire folder (which will give you a copy of the blockchain, any .conf settings file, etc. in addition to the wallet.dat file) or open the folder up and copy the wallet.dat file from there.

Make sure to *copy* the file and not move it by holding down the Option key on the keyboard, and do any of these steps only when the wallet application is not running.

You can also use the Go menu in the finder and click the option near the bottom labeled "Go to Folder" and type or paste the following into the window that opens up

~/library/Application Support/Florincoin

and it will take you straight to the Florincoin folder.

I also strongly recommend encrypting your wallet before doing this as anyone who can get access to that wallet.dat file would then have access to your funds!  I show how this works in this tutorial:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBK60Zaq-dM

Both of the above are using BitSeeds as the example, but it works the same way in most altcoin wallet applications including Florincoin.

Hope that makes sense, and helps, lidude.

Is there an official response to the issue of having a potentially very large blockchain?
Yes. https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.2503914

Adding inputs and outputs to a transaction creates a lot more potential blockchain bloat than any tx-comment could. In the end, bytes are bytes, and the fee structure will take care of that issue.

The host I was using to run the florincoin.info explorer shut the site down, I think because someone tried to DDOS them (or us) by making a lot of requests to the block explorer. I'll have to re-write the code so the database isn't easily exploitable by requesting an address or a set of transactions that have hundreds of thousands of inputs and outputs.

Unfortunately I'm away all weekend so it won't be up any time soon. I believe there are some alternate explorers available.

ShapeShift has added a buy/sell feature to the real time market data website CoinCap.io! You can now buy or sell Florincoin straight from the market data website. Learn more about this here: http://bit.ly/1UVFZ7m

Did y'all end your relationship with Altquick.co?

I could never get verification for the # of FLO they held for sale, so I got sketched out and didn't make any large buys.

They gave me my coins finally.  Now about 5 million in 2 wallets.  Funny thing is there are only about 300k left on the exchange.  Look for the spike, I'm gonna run this one up.

Strongly recommend buyin Altquick out of their coins prior to pushing the market.

Of course do as you wish and I'm happy to see you got your coins.
