wired.com just reprinted an article on prime gaps from Quanta magazine: http://www.wired.com/2014/12/mathematicians-make-major-discovery-prime-numbers/

No mention of gapcoin, though.

Are there any direct scientific benefits to finding large prime gaps?

Prime numbers are interesting for lots of mathematicians around the globe,
and they're also important to every day cryptography (see RSA).

Researches about prime gaps could not only lead to new breakthroughs in the bounded gap,
it may also help proving the Twin Prime Conjecture and maybe even the millennium problem,
the Riemann hypothesis. Who knows?

Gapcoin also broke several hundred records for new first known occurrence prime gaps:

http://www.trnicely.net/gaps/g4k.html
http://www.trnicely.net/gaps/g6k.html

And they get more every day: http://gapcoin.org/primegaps-length.php

We also got listed within the world record list for the top-20 highest merits: http://primerecords.dk/primegaps/gaps20.htm

Greetings

I have just started mining this interesting coin and have a few questions.

Does anyone have any information on what a good ratio of GPUs per type of CPU would work best for this?

Currently I have been playing around with a rig that was originally setup for scrypt, which means the CPU is minimal.

I am running 3 GPUs (R9 270x) and think the bottle neck is currently the CPU, Intel Celeron 2.6 GHz dual core. Would this CPU be able to support 2 GPUs effectively, i.e. one GPU per CPU core or should I only use 1 GPU?

Update: Seems my original hunch was fairly accurate, shut one GPU down and getting about the same overall results. Previously with 3x GPUs I was getting about 500k hash each, for a total of about 1,500 khash. Now down to 2 GPUs seems they are averaging closer to 750k each, for the same total as before.

I even went down to one GPU for a test, but my setup seems to work best with 2 GPUs. I would also add that these hash rates are only averages, as the minute by minute fluctuation seems to vary widely. I have had individual GPUs span from 400 khash to 1,200 khash, so I am just using the longer term pool reported averages for my calculations.

What if somebody writes an article about Gapcoin on Wikipedia and adds a link to it in 'See also' part of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_gap? Or it's too early and project is not not big enough yet? Even an article about such a successful project as Primecoin was nominated for deletion. Do we have any "identifying reliable sources"?
Sorry, if somebody already expressed this idea, I don't read the thread closely.

Enjoy your holidays Smiley
Thanks Smiley

I also want to thank you all for your great support,
without you Gapcoin wouldn't be where it is now.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Much love here.

Sorry, I need to catch up here.  What is the most efficient way to achieve more records?  First, is it through CPU or GPU mining?

GPU mining is faster, providing you have a CPU that can handle the work... so both really, or just a some good powered CPU's

need some updates:
1. wallet
2. site
for a start it will be enough.

crz just sent me the new logos for the wallet,
unfortunately I don't have access to my compiler environment over the holidays,
but I'll publish the next wallet release afterwards.

I just made a few updates to the website, including the prime gap section.
The is a new site containing new first known occurrence prime gaps which are not yet listed at http://www.trnicely.net
I'll frequently submit the gaps listed there, so please don't spam Dr. Nicely.

http://gapcoin.org/primegaps-length.php

ps: I submitted the gaps only two days ago, and we already found 29 new records.
Enjoy your holidays Smiley

Has anyone been able to run the GPU miner on an Nvidia card or Amazon GPU instances? Trying to mine on my 750ti's without any success so far -

It's the shame that coin with such beautiful idea for PoW is semi-dead now.  Embarrassed No way we can set a record with such volume and price.

I don't think it's dead, I don't think anyone has ever heard of it, yet. I found out about it on accident. I think a tiny bit of promotion would bring many people in.

The coin's early inflation is what was driving the price down, the total coins was doubling every few days, then weeks, I think now it is probably 50 days until it doubles again. But market cap has stayed around $5000 the whole time.

No one is dumping (I'd buy if they were), and only 30% of all coins are on poloniex. Who's hoarding the rest?

And to top it off the hashrate has not dropped much, it is around the same it was a month ago, it did not crash even though the price did.

So I am still very optimistic on this coin. Overtake Donald Knuth's record and you've got a great news story that can make it to programmer circles and gain new interest.

Hi there,

I just want to inform you that Gapcoin just broke 544 records of first known occurrence prime gaps.

The records are listed here:

http://www.trnicely.net/gaps/g4k.html
http://www.trnicely.net/gaps/g6k.html

Even if we are currently a few of steps away from the world record of the highest merit primegap,
I'm pretty sure Gapcoin can break some more records on those lists.

All gaps found by the Gapcoin network can be download either as plaintext or zip from the website (http://gapcoin.org/downloads.php).
The files are updated every hour.

I'm currently working on a method (involving Chinese remainder theorem) to improve the mining algorithm.
(I'm not really sure if it can be applied to Gapcoin's mining algorithm, but I'll keep trying)

I'll also working on a tool for parsing and processing Gapcoins prime gaps.

(both will be released here, when finished)

Well, RIC also not very active, but I think prime gape searching is more simple and elegant idea, also more clear for 'average man'. Looks like only good old Primecoin is more or less alive in 'prime family'.
