As the OP states, there is no definitive plan yet for how we will be handling the economic fork (coin swap) of SPR and HLM. Rest assured, whether a escrow-type system or blockchain snapshot is used to perform this we will ensure every security measure is taken. Credibility, transparency and trust are all virtues that Helium Development Team takes very seriously.

The news about helium taking the fight to them for taking our ideas must be getting around  

How would you protect yourself from being scammed by someone sending and claiming hes/her amount of SPR , multiple times...

lets say you have 100 SPR.

Send them to escrow to confirm you have 100 SPR. He'll send you back 100 SPR, plus 100 helium. Well, that's one of the options.

Whatever happens, you'll end up with 200 coins (less any escrow fees) where you only had 100.

SPR will be just fine. It will still continue and thrive. Just on a different road map.

Although I said I won't be buying or selling any SPR during this transaction period - we do have some modest start-up funding needs like domain names and some basic infrastructure.  I may sell some SPR and convert that as a loan to the helium dev fund or something. We'll discuss the options around this on Slack too.

Snapshot method for byteball distribution seemed to work brilliantly.

Yeah, I saw that but then the picture you posted mentioned the use of an escrow again.  When I think of distributing coins via a blockchain snapshot, I think of loading my private keys into a client to claim my coins.  A fully automated process.

If that is too much of a pain in the ass for some reason (I assume addresses in HLM will not be formatted the same way as SPR addresses which might cause an issue?) then use the escrow.  No reason to make people send their SPR to the escrow though.  Just have people sign a message with their SPR address, that message being their new HLM address.  Escrow just needs to verify the signature, get the SPR balance from the snapshot, and send off the appropriate amount of HLM.  Once he gets a system down, it shouldn't take the escrow any longer to distribute coins via this method vs having everyone send him their SPR.

Also, you are out of your mind if you think Bittrex would ever agree to send their customer's coins to an escrow.  Bittrex doesn't necessarily have to participate (nor is there any guarantee they are going to participate even if we take my approach) but if SPR does high volume leading up to the HLM distribution and Bittrex essentially ends up holding their customer's HLM after the snapshot (whether they want to or not!) it is going to be very hard for them to say no to listing HLM immediately.

Taking a snapshot is in the OP, so I'm not against it.

If you are against doing a snapshot for some reason, only way to avoid the above 2 scenarios is to set a hard deadline (a specific time or block) at which your SPR must be submitted to the escrow and escrow cannot start sending back any SPR or HLM until after the said deadline.

This is an inferior method of doing it vs a snapshot for many reasons though.

-People will need to trust the escrow to hold their SPR for an extended amount of time.

-Exchanges won't be able to participate.

-Will need to set a reasonable timeframe for the swap and investors who only check in once or twice a year will miss out.

-Lack of transparency

-Trusting one person to potentially be holding nearly 100% of all SPR at the same time.  He better be REALLY trustworthy......

We're going to keep the number of communication channels down to a very small number for the immediate future.

But we do now have the ability to grow outwards to where the average person likes to hang out, when we need to do that.
