The overuse of
prescription medication

Currently, it is possible to be prescribed the same medicine
from one or more online pharmacies as well as your
regular NHS doctor. Opioid painkillers are one class of
drug that can be addictive, and when taken in quantities
above recommended British National Formulary (BNF)
doses, opioids can be life-threatening.

For example, a patient could be prescribed an opioid
from two online pharmacies. In a short window of time,
they receive two batches of opioid through the post and
also use their regular NHS prescription to receive a third
supply from their local pharmacy. They are now in possession
of potentially lethal quantities of the drug. More extreme
cases exist in the real world with patients obtaining over
10 sources of opioid.

Essentially, the scenarios described above only become
possible when there is no reliable source of information on
what medicine a patient has been prescribed, regardless
of who prescribed it.

Medication provenance and the
pharmaceutical supply chain - Counterfeit Medications

Trust is absolutely integral when it comes to any
conversation about medication. When a patient takes
medication, they are trusting that it is in the best interest
of their health, and also that the medicine has been
manufactured and supplied to them in accordance with the
agreed standards. The same goes for pharmacists. They
have to trust that the medicines they are dispensing and/
or selling are purchased from a reputable source where
Good Distribution Practice (GDP) is followed and the
integrity of medicines is without question. For this to be
the case, the medicine manufacturer, wholesaler, and
courier all need to be operating a high quality, compliant
supply chain; the more transparency that exists in this
supply chain, the greater the level of trust of all involved,
including the patients.
