"Hydrogen economy" is a nice dream for now, and it will takes at least three miracles to happen.
First, as pointed out in the article, hydrogen is not a fuel. It is just a means for transportation and distribution. Energy has to come somewhere to make the hydrogen from water. The cleanest way of course is to use sunlight to split water to hydrogen and oxygen or to use solar electricity to electrolyze water. This means to have a viable "hydrogen economy", solar energy utilization would have to be cheap.
