Everything was prepared and was mining straight away. But with coins being found but not accepted it kinda seems pointless carrying on.

Yep, you can use any port number you want, just connect your miners to that port.
BTW I'm solo mining at 2MH from the minute the wallet appeared, found tens if not hundreds of blocks, and my wallet shows a zero balance. All found blocks had been rejected..
