The Retirement Dilemma: Can Cryptocurrency Help You Manage Your Fears and Expectations?

http://dcebrief.com/the-retirement-dilemma-can-cryptocurrency-help-you-manage-your-fears-and-expectations/

Way to go, RJF!  It's already posted on CryptoMoms under the DNotes board, but I'm also going to post it under the Retirement thread.  Everyone that belongs to a pension plan should be living (and saving) as if they don't have one, because the current system is unsustainable.

Great points in the article!

p.s. That must be the only 5 consecutive clean words George Carlin has ever said! Wink

Actually, he said, on many occasions, "what a f***ing concept".  He had to clean it up for TV Grin

That's a great quote. As evidenced by history time and again, sitting back and watching the world go by while you do nothing is a sure recipe for disaster. Hasn't the point finally been driven home by the recent US bank failures and bailouts? Sigh... Hey bankers, just sit back and watch, but, this time, we will let you know when you can play again...

It wasn't until I read about bitcoin's potential for the biggest wealth transfer in history, that I finally 'got it' and 'got in' to cryptocurrency.  What I see here is the arrogance and ignorance of 'too big to fail suits' setting themselves up to pass their wealth back to the people. Smiley

It's not surprising that their attitude is in stark contrast to the group aged 14 to 29 years old, who coincidentally have the lowest level of trust for banks and financial institutions.  Smart group!!

Much of that is due to the lack of knowledge or just plain ignorance as to what Bitcoin and digital currency is about. I would give more credit to the following findings:

"The opinion of financial executives differs to that of a previous survey undertaken by Bitkom earlier this year. Targeting everyday citizens, the summer survey revealed 36% of Germans would be open to acquiring or adopting Bitcoin as a currency. That opinion rose to 53% of those surveyed who were between 14-29 years."

Yup!

[First, put on your True Believers’ Cap:

importing gold weakens the Indian economy. It’s got to stop!

So, the massive amount of gold in India’s temples should be ‘monetised,' making it available for a range of domestic uses:

the temples pass the gold to the government. The government gives them pieces of paper in return.* The government then sells the (actual) gold to jewelers, and pays the pieces-of-paper holders interest on the no-longer-physically-available gold.

*There is, readers, almost an industry explaining how fractionally-reservificated the gold-ETF industry has become – in exact parallel to fiat fractional-reserve banking. It’s gotta be five years since I read my first articles on this little scam.]

I don't get it, are the temples in India supposed to hand over their gold (that was donated by the people as a religious act) to the government?

I thought this was a neat and interesting way to tackle the scaling issue, found in this article: http://www.coindesk.com/hard-fork-developers-scaling-bitcoin/

Scaling Bitcoin Hong Kong returned for day two today, with presentations showcasing the breadth of ideas for how bitcoin’s transaction processing capacity can be improved and the speed at which some have consolidated into plans of action.

Audience enthusiasm was more pronounced early in the day as proposals for longstanding ideas such as payment channels via the Lightning Network were demonstrated with renewed clarity, while developer Pieter Wuille wowed with segregated witness (small presentation link) – a proposal for scaling the bitcoin blockchain without requiring a hard fork.

[...]

Segregated witness

The most well-received talk of the day was given by Blockstream co-founder Pieter Wuille, in which the developer made the case that the block size could be increased with only a soft fork to the network, should changes be made to how transaction signatures are handled.

“What if we can redesign bitcoin from scratch?” Wuille asked. “What if we were designing an altcoin? There’s no way you would do it the way bitcoin did.”

Wuille began the talk by breaking down bitcoin transactions, explaining that they are the sum of inputs and outputs, and that the input contains a signature meant to prove the owner. In Wuille’s model, the witness, or signature, would be separated from the transaction so that adding it would be optional.

“Today, they are inherent in the transaction, you can’t remove it. With segregated witness this would be possible when you give to lightweight wallet or dropped from the blockchain after year. We’ll remember the transactions, but not who authorized them,” he said.

Overall, the proposal characterizes the current issues with the bitcoin network as its validation and data storage processes. By changing how the network handles signature data, it would increase the bitcoin blocksize to 1.75MB with current transactions, and to 4MB should the majority of these transactions be multisig.

"We can increase the block size with a soft fork. This is my proposal," Wuille concluded.

The statement was met with applause from the audience, excitement that was mirrored by Wuille who was sometimes unable to contain his enthusiasm onstage.

Didn't understand the slide very well, but yes it seems like a good solution. Creative and unique idea that appears to be easier to implement and would cause less problems on the network. Unsure if it is solution that would allow the thousands of transactions per second reported by the payment processors.

The latest move by the Greek government to have its citizens declare assets is disturbing.  This path is a slippery slope and while they appear to only be targeting the wealthy (for now), what is stopping them from moving on to everyone?  The wealthy generally have the means and financial sophistication to hide assets abroad, so it is unlikely the government will ever have full knowledge of their assets.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-12-01/greeks-told-declare-cash-under-mattress-jewelry-and-precious-stones

Pretty scary, I can only imagine what they could possibly need that information for. Reminded me of a recent article I read "Law enforcement took more stuff from people than burglars did last year" the title says it all.

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

Pastor Martin Niemöller

I think that pretty much sums up the immediate future of the Greek people if they do nothing....

Wow! That is powerful with much sad truth.

I always seem to be scrambling to find the best information to email someone that is interested in finding out more about DNotes.  To solve my scrambling dilemma, I've written a 'Welcome to DNotes' letter.  Feel free to use it, adjusting it as you see fit, whenever you need to send someone additional information.  I've spared the tech details so as not to overwhelm the recipient, but if you have any other ideas for this letter, please post them - someone will always be able to use them.  Update the news releases as needed.

Very well written and well thought out letter, than you Chase! I believe you are right on the tech details, most people wouldn't need them. This could easily be customized for a personal approach or to fit the target audience as well, very helpful.

 ' . . . it is premature to assume that it's going to go down . . . "

Thanks for your post, Wiser. I was reluctant to ask for info because The Frankenstein of Wild Speculation keeps busting out of the lab, and killing the villagers. Your conclusion accords with mine.

Mark (IndiaMikeZulu), Australia

I agree, and wish they would communicate the issues openly instead of keeping it a secret, the wild speculation is from fear of the unknown (coupled with some bad experiences people have had), which is probably a lot more damaging than whatever issue they are actually facing.
