Teamspeak 3 has encrypted voice and is free.  I want to look more into how secure it really is though.  It doesn't get you SIP, but there is an iPhone app (maybe other phones too) so you can still go mobile with it.

And tor will definitely cause latency issues.  I was reading that i2p is better for faster services but the article didn't really go into why and that might have just been for resolving, not sure about latency.  Maybe a different anonymous routing system could work, but the latency is kind of built into having your connection bounce around the world.

will the call rates be cheaper to US phones or will it be all the same cost internationally?

By payphone i mean browser based softphone with a one connection limit . You will need mic and speakers. Goal is for it to be in HTML 5 but mic isn't fully exposed yet in the standard. Might have to go java based. I really want it so that nothing needs to be downloaded to use it. I'm going to start with one "booth" and hopefully scale up from there.

Basically when you hit the insert coin button you will get a new bitcoin address to send BTC to if left blank. If not blank and an address is entered, a check will be made to see if that address contains funds and is actually mine. If it passes these checks a phone call can be made.  If you want to verify encryption you will have to sniff the packets i guess or call a ZRTP enabled  device/softphone and verify the codes match.

Interesting. Although, I wonder about the use case and scenario...

you wonder why anonymous phone calls would be useful?

Not that specifically, but the actual process by which you could perform such a task at a payphone. I would find it hard to punch in a private key on a 10key pad. Also, I would have to wonder at what point in the process does it become non-anonymous, to avoid such an absurdity. But I still like the idea.

i read 'payphone' to mean a piece of software you run on your PC that's hooked up to your mic/headphones... not a glass box on the side of the road with a big clunky machine in it.

That would make more sense, thank you.

Web-based payphone powered by Bitcoins accessible via TOR
There will also by softphone and hardware SIP access available.

I'm bringing back the anonymous phone call. Stay tuned. Project is 25% complete.

Calls will be SRTP + ZRTP + TLS encrypted. Access will be based on actual polling of the block chain so there is no database to be hacked.
Comments welcome.

Nice.  Will users be able to verify that their call is encrypted, or do we have to trust your website?

Have you solved the TOR latency problem?

Uhm.. no , I wasn't aware of a issue. I haven't started on the front-end stuff yet. TOR isn't a necessity for anonymity ,it just adds another layer.

TOR is very slow and I can't see it supporting voip at a decent speed.  I am watching this project though and can't wait to see it done!

As a security researcher that spent 2+ years focusing exclusively on VoIP systems, I whole-heartedly support this (:
