I don't know if you are directly involved in the project, but I'm not sure who is, and I wanted to report that I believe I may see a bug in the new nextDifficulty calculator.  I know it is supposed to be more accurate, but right now, http://dot-bit.org/tools/nextDifficulty_old.php shows 94035.9021742 as the next difficulty citing a x4 max adjustment while the newer calculator (in your posted URL) shows it being 107608.93, which is presumably wrong because of the x4 max adjustment limit.
Yes, thanks for reporting it (you are the second one :p). It's fixed.

Already fixed.

- namecoin difficulty is subject to a boomerang effect : after a x4, a x0.38 is currently expected. But, hashing power seems to increase again since several days (instant power drop to x0.20 but is now at x0.31).

so, I thought my domains expired, but they all still work. However, when I do "./namecoind name_list" the domains show negative expire times. For example, one of them says:
Code:
"expires in" : -484
What does that mean?
It's now free and somebody else can register it. You can't renew it too, you must register it again (name_new, name_firstupdate).

I must update my DNS server to ignore names with negative values (something changed, they was marked as "expired: 1" in a previous version of namecoin)
Edit : fixed.

Latest news about the project :

- expiration time has been increased, as asked by a lot of people, from 12k to 36k blocks (250 days instead of 83). Change will take effect at block 24k (commit).

- fees will decrease faster after block 24k, to avoid the past situation where registering a name cost near 40$ (current price : 7.5$).

- 2000 domains names are currently reserved for a total of 2020 names. 44 names have expired and are free again (see also expiring soon).

- namecoin difficulty is subject to a boomerang effect : after a x4, a x0.38 is currently expected. But, hashing power seems to increase again since several days (instant power drop to x0.20 but is now at x0.31).

- draft spec still needs your comments to be finalized.

Always open for namecoin sales

hardly can call something related[even as bootstrap]to notorious-namespace "p2p DNS".
not [enough]tampering/hijack-proof.

Here are some recent questions about the design of the project :

- Storing data in a DHT ?

- How to prevent rush on new TLD/namespace over time

- Change the expire time of a domain

- [SPEC] Domain name specification

It's not a big deal to implement these features, but it's hard to go back and change things after everyone starts using it. So criticisms/requests/flame welcome. Smiley

I've updated the two linux archives (32 & 64bits) of namecoind with latest patches (ex: Report immature coinbase transactions in listtransactions, and a lot more patches from bitcoins)

If someone wants to build the windows version, i would put it on the dot-bit wiki.

Is there a good blog post that explains this project to non-bitcoin fanatics?
It might be too technical, but I blogged about it recently: http://www.bluishcoder.co.nz/2011/05/12/namecoin-a-dns-alternative-based-on-bitcoin.html

Here is small tool to check the json-value you submit in namecoin :
http://dot-bit.org/tools/domainCheck.php

It only says if the json-syntax is valid and tries to correct \, " and ' problems.
It may avoid some common problems when registering a domain :p
