No you don't need to have your wallet open for staking, my wallet crashed several times when I was away from home but the amount of ANC still went up with every confirmation.
@antshares I hope there comes a update for the windows wallet after the weekend, as I said in my answer to 'lin0sspice' it keeps crashing after +/- 15 hours. And I like to keep it running for network support.
Also I get a error when I use 'Rebuild Index'
