You are right if your wallet already had transactions public key is not needed, but if it doesnt public key is needed to send the stake. At nem stake this public key thing was solved by the thing that you had to send 1 nxt to issuing wallet.

It's got nothing to do with the value of the coins, it's about the percentage of the total amounts of coins held by a single individual. 50,000 coins represents a whopping 5%. If one day these guys decide to dump, the coin would very likely die.
Buyers should resist the urge to buy more beyond a certain point, to protect their own investment and allow the coin reach as many hands as possible.
