7zip is not a part of the default install and the command set is not so similar like bzip2 and gzip
Default install of what? And yes, 7zip can be used via cmd line. When your dealing with blockchains as large as zeta, rdd, btc, etc, every byte that you can squeeze out helps.

Keep in mind that the above comparison was done in 2008 using default settings. I can get 45-50% compression ratio with most blockchains/bootstraps that I 7zip for transfer or archival/backup using the ultimate setting.

http://zet.cointech.net/bootstrap.bz2 1.2 GB the same file, but compressed. And you may be make change to .dat after the uncompress. And take a very long time to compress... the flat dat file is better may be.
Edit: the compress/decompress take about 20 minutes on my server, so if you have a new 4-8 cores and SSD disk is good to get bzip2 file. If you have fast connection to the files - .dat file is the better choose.

Might I suggest you use 7zip in the future, it regularly gets me 45% of the original for blockchain/bootstrap compression.
I will toss up a link to amazon in a bit with a 7zipped bootstrap for anyone else who may be looking in the future.
