Hello there; first post to let you know I have managed to run 3 antminer U3 at the same time on a raspberry 1, using a usb 3.0 hub.

Here is a small link, you can ask me details if you need !

(Credits goes to Sven Goessling for the original tuto : http://sven-goessling.de/13/04/2015/raspberry-pi-1-und-2-antminer-u3-installieren/ )

To make it short :

- install the required libraries
- clone 4.9.2 from https://github.com/ckolivas/cgminer and not from the bitmaintech
- compile it using sudo autogen.sh --enable-icarus and sudo make

-after that, the command line usage is  :

sudo ./cgminer -o POOL -u USER -p PASS --au3-volt 800 --au3-freq 237.5

NOTICE THE CHANGE IN FREQ/VOLT PARAMETERS IN PLAIN !

You can try to increase the volt/freq, but these are my parameters, working fine.

FOR THE HARDWARE :

Use a PC PSU, wire yellow and black for the 12V lines on the PSU to the U3 (I cut the wires of the crappy PSU they included to scavage the plug) and the red/black 5V lines of the PSU to power your USB Hub.

PS : I should receive 2 more this week, I will let you know if they work too.

How often did they get stuck before you cut the wire?

Well, it's not the USB power causing the zombie, had 2 zombie after about 35 hours with the 5V wire cut (about 5 min apart) and had to do the power cycle to get them to come back.

So back to the drawing board.

Ok, but this time around, I suppose you didn't have to unplug the USB cable, right?

That was the first thing I tried, it didn't work, so just shut everything down, switched back to the good cables, and powered back on.

Wait so, you had the USB red wire cut, the device went zombie, you unplugged the power cord, plugged it back in, and the device still remained zombie until you did the same with the USB cable???

No, tried resetting by just pulling USB first (thats all I ever did before cutting the wire), that didn't work. To get them back up, I had to remove the power (while power was down, switched back to the good cables).

That's the problem with the U3's, no rhyme, no reason, no set time. Just when they decide to zombie they zombie.

Got 3 that I cut the red wire in the USB cable on (the cheap cables that they come with), 3 without cutting the wire (good cables), on the same PSU, and same USB hub.

Just to make it even, I rebooted the Pi around 8:30 this morning, and started over to see which ones stop first. Already had 1 of each loose connection, but they re-connected by their self (which is good).

So I'm not touching it any more until I get a zombie or the Pi stops.

The first one I cut went ~ 31 - 32 hours and hashed steady.

Take that money and buy a used S3+ instead.  It will hash faster and be way less of a head ache.

I could never get more than 1 to run at the same time, let alone 3 at once.

This is great advice, you can pick up a S3 on eBay for under 150 and they just work.

I'm getting frustrated with these U3 units!  Last night I reset the entire unit at 20:00 and by 06:00 I had 2 zombie units. They go zombie for no rhyme or reason.  I'm running CGMiner 4.9.2 on a Windows 7 (64) PC for now.  Anyone have any ideas?

I have 3 of them and they are a bit finicky and need to be watched as they go into ZOMBIE mode and need to restarted.  I had mine running from yesterday afternoon and by 15:30 today I already had one that needed to be restarted.  They've been running fine for the last 3+ hours.  I have multiple Bitmain products (U1, U2, S1, S3, S5) and they are all stable, the U3 is something that you can't just plug in and forget or else it will stop hashing!

Yes, they are resetting or cgminer is resetting them.  Eventually they will follow this course to ZOMBIE and you will have to unplug them to bring them back to life again.

I then downloaded CGMiner 4.9.0 and have all three devices hashing... only issue is that the devices go ZOMBIE for no rhyme or reason.

Did you try cgminer 4.9.2?  It had several updates, including a few that were U3 specific I believe.

I updated to 4.9.2 yesterday at 11:59 EST running 3 U3 units, this morning when I got into work at around 07:45 the units swapped USB ports and again when I just checked at 13:14.

11:59
1: AMU3
2: AMU3
3: AMU3

07:45
3: AMU3
4: AMU3
5: AMU3

13:14
3: AMU3
4: AMU3
6: AMU3

I'm assuming that this means that the devices are going zombie, but CGMIner is re-detecting them automatically?  The only device that is constant is the one that is port 3.

I was originally solo mining against my wallet with them, I going to point the U3's at http://solo.ckpool.org/ next, I've just been messing around with them.  I have about 7TH of hashing that I point at pools.

7TH, that's a nice little setup.  I'm surprised the U3 was something that interested you with that much hash already.  I have to ask, what drew you to the U3?

The U3 was the first ASIC miner I bought, somehow it didn't turn me off to mining despite all its problems.

I was looking for something to throw on my desk at work.

Oh, you're pool mining with a U3?  Are you actually making money, will the U3 roi for you?

For people with cheap or free power they should ROI someday, that is if they get them started and runing for more than 48 h Wink

I'll try this in a little while, I'm currently at 49 hours on 4.9.0 hashing against AntPool and still running strong.  What's weird is that I kept going zombie within a few hours when running against F2Pool.
