there is a major Euro poker site which just started to accept deposit in BTC, do not remember domain though ...

It is ONE of the 50 or so skins on the iPoker network.  It is a relatively small poker room.  They just recently started using btc.  It would not be them.

There is also a Russian skin on the Revolution network that uses btc.  Again there is no direct competition as the markets are different but then again they are Russian.

And, I sincerely apologize for my misquote on ransom amount and from where.  My bad.  Memory's failing in the old age, I reckon.
Don't sweat it!!  I was just being pedantic  Grin  and I thought people would be interested to see the ransom / threat that you were referencing.

I saw what was said about how the gov't would just shut it down.  Sure - but with what cause?  A "black op", if you will, would be smarter in this case.  Sure, you could get the public to "boo" a site that infringes on copyrights (like megaupload), but can you get everyone against a decentralized currency that could potentially make the Federal Reserve obsolete?  I don't think so.
I don't know about that.  MegaUpload had a lot of support, and they didn't have a cause to do it, either.  In fact, we learned later, they were not acting under the letter of the law.

Really, if the govt wanted to shut down a bitcoin/litecoin site, they just say it was laundering money for criminals. Cheap and Easy.

I just don't see the govt taking mining pools are a serious threat.  Maybe they do, and I'm wrong, but it seems far fetched.

So, are you thinking that the DDoS of DT and the attacks against various pools (illpoet and I use different ones) are mere coincidences?

I don't.  And that's why I put up my other two theories.

Speaking of the Federal Reserve becoming obsolete, that's where the banks come in to my thoughts.  For, without the FR, what is Citi gonna do?

Also, no one has claimed responsibility.

well, I don't knw about that.  There are other bitcoin games and casinos that are more popular than Seals.
But are there any bitcoin *poker* sites as popular as Seals?

not that I know of

But, I don't think something like this makes sense from a direct competitor.  It makes more sense that a new site, that CAN'T compete would do something like this.

I may be way out in conspiracy land with this, but to me, on something like this, you look for motivation.  Who has the most to gain by Seals being down?  A new bitcoin poker room?  A new bitcoin gambling site?

Maybe that was their launch strategy...  Grin

yeah, I hear ya.  But, if Seals had been down for more time, say 2 weeks, I'm sure they would have lost some players.

I just don't know of any legitimate competitors.

Ya but in the end its a fail as all the seals will ultimately come back, every time.
yeah, for sure, I agree with this.  Though, the reasoning may have been to create enough downtime to get players to explore other options.

I don't know, but it is possible.  It's a theory.

I think smaller/newer poker sites actually have the most to gain for Seals being down.  What sites are new and looking for customers?  With Seals down, players want to go somewhere.  It might not be poker games, either.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the highly plausible scenario that it is a rival/competitor site/industry.  Casino/poker rooms see some compeition rising up, Seals is getting popular, let's shut them down for a bit.

Seems like the most likely scenario to me.  Who has the most to gain?  What would their methods be?

Govt - not a chance.  If the govt wanted you down, you'd be down.  They don't DDoS, they seize your domain.  Ask MegaUpload how the govt takes you down.

It could be kids or pranksters, but I tend to think there is some motivation here.

Do we need a BTC mafia for protection?

The only domains the US gov can seize are dot com and seals is not dot com.  All US facing gambling sites have changed their domains so what happened to Poker Stars and Full Tilt as far as domain seizures  cannot happen to them.

also just a coincidence that all the major litecoin pools under ddos attacks recently as well?
really?  I didn't even know.  I guess both of those guys are bummed...
 Grin

but seriously, litecoin going down is probably just people fucking around, I kinda doubt it is related to this, though it might be.

So, let's a make a list of entities that would benefit from Seals being down:

disgruntled players
competition
idealists

and then you can throw in the random teenager.

Which is the most likely?  an angry player, followed by competition.  You know, for competition, it could be something as simple as people talking about Seals in Fiat rooms.  Things are weird in the poker industry, people are loyal to certain houses and tables, and they take shit seriously.

We will probably never know, but these sorts of tests on a system are good for long term stability.
