You rank up by posting messages / answering questions in the forum.
You can earn altcoins in several ways either by bounties or through airdrops. Bounties can be tasks done through social media or by posting here on bitcointalk. Airdrops are free but most quality drops need you to have Jr+ rank.
You cant change it yourself but you can post more to increase your rank. Rank is based on activity and at 30 activity you will be Jr. Member

Are there ways to earn some altcoins by doing some work or promotions..I am still a newbie and cant participate in many campaigns...any other way to earn
In able to earn some decent amount of altcoins you just have to sign up at bitcoin talk forum and then answer the questions that they have and by that they will give you some amount of alt coins in exchange to the effort that you did. It will surely help you to earn so much coins and will give you so much money. Hmm what questions are you reffering to? You mean answering on the topics/posting more?

If you want to earn some decent amount of altcoins then you should rank up your account first so you will have more chance to be qualified in altcoin bounty campaigns because they want a higher rank of account and a newbie rank is so rare to get accepted. If you build up to member to full member rank then you can easily work in bounty campaigns.
