I don't always drink...

Just out of curiosity, (doing a little research and planning, couldn't find a thread on the subject), anyone here have any crypto rigs mining inside a "hydroponics" grow tent?

I've got a couple dozen Vega 56s and I am wondering what is the maximum operating temperature for the Vegas.  I already plan on moving about 720 CFM of air to the outside.

you want to keep the GPU's under 70c which can require up to 3500rpm on Overclocked settings.  Using hwinfo64 you can see HBM temps which are usually +10c hotter than GPU temps.  The GPU will start to throttle when HBM gets 80c+.

As for grow tents you don't want to force air too fast through the gpu's as it will cause too much turbulence and wont give them time to dissipate heat properly.  Don't think of it as a high powered vacuum as you won't see much of a temp drop. You will just need a top exhaust fan to slowly remove heat and an unrestricted fresh air source from the bottom.

Thanks for your input.  I am going to make this tent happen.  I'll report back.

I read something about a maximum of four vega gpu:s per system. Is that correct ?
Is it the driver that dont support more then four cards ?

I still have best settings with my stock 56 on blockchain drivers. Win 10. No power mod. No bios flash. Set HBCC up to 16000 on the slider. If it doesn't go this high up your virtual memory, reboot and come back in, should slide up then. -30% Frequency, 950 MHz memory, Fan speed from 3300-Max, Temp Target can get 68-70 but card never gets above 62. Power limit -21%. For xmr you need to 2016 and 1600 intensity set for index 0 and 1.

Running XMR-Stak at 1920 H/s and Claymore Eth-only @ 40 with these settings. If the card down clocks or doesn't get these rates, you can "reset" the card simply by sliding the HBCC slider back to max and then re-applying. Can instantly re-launch and rates are back up. I hear you can get better ETH rates with the new driver, but they seem to suck for XMR- it will seemingly hover around 1500 instead of 1900.
I guess you have free electricity. Lucky you.

XMR-stak or cast xmr?
You need to try both. For me cast is more stable. The reported hashrates however are bogus. The real hash rates are in line with xmr-stak (I mean those at the pool, after few days mining). It also needs a little more power.

There's another user here, running the same or very similar setup as mine, and he was better with stak.

I'm just trying cast-xmr for the first time. Started to mine with cast on all of my rigs. It gives a littel bit better hashrate (according to the client). You don't have to wait at the start to initialize code and cards.
One of my rig give some errors. Even if it's only a few percent 2-4% I don't know why and it makes me nervous.

I'm going to run cast for a few days and compare the results in the pool.

Custom Resolution Utility is your friend.. a little utility called restart64.exe
Run this on a script on startup, it re-enables HBCC for all cards in the system with no fuss.
You heard it here first.
Restarting the cards is a well-known solution to AMD/Windows' poor driver handling.

I run all my V56 cards in my shed, they are set to run at 60C, but i have several exhaust/inlet fans in the mix to keep it there. using about 6kw @ 150/ea do the math.

In general, the cooler you run them, the longer they'll last. Especially the capacitors.

Also, for all those trying to run multiple carts..

I remember one thread here about that.  It works quite well in fact.  Vegas dont like heat though, as they will throttle.  720cfm is good airflow, but the tent will still be very warm.

I have emailed Sapphire tech for a response as they should know the maximum operating temperature.  I am looking at the problem as if the tent temperature would be the same as a PC case temperature during optimal gaming.  I have read elsewhere that case temps as high as 50-60 degrees C are not a problem.  Still, if anyone has done this successfully I'd love to know your temps, etc.

you need to keep memory temp as low as possible. In my experience under 65°C, otherwise clock goes down.
So usually I try to keep core under 50°C to have mem arround 65°C.

Okay surprise surprise.. with two cards if I toggle HBC on card #1 it works just fine. If I toggle HBC on #2 (previously working) now card #2 disappears from Crimson.. it's always the "last" listed card in Crimson. This is quite interesting.
Dude, have you flashed your bios to the latest version?
Otherwise try another mobo.
Or play around with the PCI-E settings in bios. It sounds like there could be some inconsistencies there.
Yep flashed to the latest version. I've tried PCIe Gens 1, 2, and 3.

I'll be grabbing a Z370 mobo from Microcenter this afternoon.
Let us know how that works out. Which mobo did you use so far out of interest?

amd mining is usually more tricky than nvidia :
- with nvidia, most of the time, you just use the lattest driver, one miner among ccminer (open source), ccminer spmod (closed source with some optimisation for some algos, you must pay), eventually an ethminer and equihash one, then you play with the intensity and the overclock and that's all.
- with amd: this is more tricky : you must use the right software, with a modded bios or a registry hack, with the good miner (depends on the algo) and mine the right coin: you have less algo choice than nvidia, but amd is better for eth dual mining and xmr/aeon. Then you need to restart the driver/miner for various reasons (change of parameter, use of 3d program ...) to keep a good hashrate.
I could add my experience. I'm running rigs of 8xVega56. But it took me two weeks to find a stable configuration and optimize everything. Bios flash, registry hacks, dealing with dark options on monitoring software to prevent hangs, finding the right miner and benchmarking/stress testing each vega separately to find its best profile (not all cards are equal). Some will happily accept lower voltages, others not. Some will hang under specific loads but will be rock stable with other loads. The MB too plays a role and the bios settings too.

There're guides and ready mods available. However, unless you're lucky, those will need a good amount of tweaking to adapt them to your rigs.

At the end, you can squeeze a good amount on cryptonight but for other algos it's not worth the hassle.

guyz, if I'm totally new for amd vega and never had amd before, can somebody to share the guide how to prepare vega 56 to mine cryptonight coins?
I heard there full guide on reddit, but can't find a link for it
My take on this is, if you've never had any experience with setting up AMD hardware and aim at getting multiple Vega's set up for mining, you're up for a lot of pain, you masochistic person! Cheesy

Grin Grin Grin dude, I'm in tears here.  Truer words were never said...

Vega is doable but probably not where you want to start with AMD cards.

guyz, you are giving me a freaky horrors here? is that really so bad and  glitchy?
tell me, one card could be ok? or also have "some" serious troubles?
pay attention, I wanna add it to Gtx1080ti rig ..

Hi, pls i am a new man, can you say me if you preffer some kind of win10 for mining or its doesnt matter?
Thanks so much...
use the latest update.

Doesnt exist a special version for mining, just the newest and 64bit? I am going to use 6x Vegas 64.
Thanks.
yes, btw, you don't need to active Windows, so it is free:)
