I'm not sure why people should help a guy that stole bitcoins from honest guys..  Roll Eyes

I'm going out on a limb here to state context - he's probably broke and now in jail and/or paying restitution fees.  He probably no longer had the nickels to rub together to pay the guy back - I wish he would come forward and admit this and offer to make payment arrangements in 2 years when he's to be released.  I mean 35 BTC is no small matter either, but cut the guy a break.

I bet he wasn't thinking about us, or the future of Bitcoin when he was rubbing all those millions. When i mention bitcoin, do you know what peoples first impressions are? I'll tell you, it's drug. His and many others are the reasons why we have posts such as https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/bitcoin-a-tool-for-cybercriminals-1008266 circulating to online consumers and further staining the reputation, which everyone has worked hard to keep clean.

C'mon guys - this is just crazy.  The poor guy went to JAIL yesterday.  He has done so much for the community.  His crime was TINY!

This is all we managed to scrape up for him?  (.6 BTC)  What!?
https://blockchain.info/address/1NEgShr962NMHXet3WTVzwuW2189JRrP93

C'mon you cheap bastards, give the guy a few bucks.

I challenge you, no, I demand you pick up your damn android and kick down a few bucks.  Just to make his first day feel a little better like someone actually cares.  I am sleeping in nice sheets tonight - he is sleeping with four roommates on canvas.  To answer this challenge, please send .111 bitcoin to 1NEgShr962NMHXet3WTVzwuW2189JRrP93 so we can see who agrees.

Charlie Shrem is one of the figures in the world of bitcoin that really did something for the community. He openly admitted to the crime--which was dealing with drug dealers in Silk Road-- and wholeheartedly accepted the consequences of his actions. Upon reading his blog and the CoinDesk article about him, my respect towards his personality increased by this line:

Quote
While inside, I’d love emails, letters, books, and magazines! Everything helps

And this one:

Quote
I did the crime and I will do the time. They say those who stand by you in the bad times, deserve to be with you in the good times. Good times are coming and I look forward to it. I also want to thank those select few in the SDNY District Court and NYSPT for treating me with dignity and respect.

The bankers told their pigs to decimate anyone involved in Bitcoin.

Becareful.

Thats not the point, the whole point was doing something illegal.
The problem is not Bitcoin, but how it got used.

Spot on but with a crypto currency that is unregulated (for the most part) and made to be very anonymous, it's trying to bring that cash concept into the online space.
Bitcoin will always have that stain of being associated with illicit activities because of these factors, as well as the high profile ones like Silk Road.

Thanks, Salty, I think I should obviously read up on this case a bit.  There's clearly waaay more to this than what was posted in the OP.

Yeah there is.  Just because he seems to be a likable guy who was heavily involved in bitcoin early on does NOT make him any less of a criminal.

Not to mention he has ripped off forum members for large amounts of btc.  He seemed to have a good rep until his trial/sentencing.  Just another bad person associated with btc.  Any good he previously did is now undone by scamming people on here.

You certainly should NOT be giving him money.  There are much worthier causes you can donate to.
Who did he scam?

He knowingly took dirty money in exchange for bitcoins knowing the exchange was to "launder the money". He knew this was wrong and against the law. He knowingly broke the law and got caught. I don't feel the need to give money to someone just because they exhibit poor judgment.  And besides I heard the guy was loaded. He has a huge bitcoin stash.

I really cannot persuade myself to donate to a guy who helped dimmer Bitcoins image, by participating in illegal activities.

Maybe someone could state otherwise?

Of course hes going to act like he didn't know he was doing anything wrong, but thats no excuse for breaking the law.

Also, I believe if you look at his profile on here he currently has scam accusations against him, that apparently he didn't plan on dealing with in a timely manner.

I dont think he needs or deserves donations from anyone.

Um. Why does someone who said on camera they spend thousands a day on lawyers deserve a Satoshi from any random poster on here?

'The Man' aside, he broke laws available for any member of the public to read and be aware of. He knew what he was doing. I do not break laws and wouldn't expect a payout from strangers if I did.

I'm sure he'll enjoy a couple of years playing tennis and then be straight back in action. Ideally the space will have moved on by then and he'll be an irrelevance. The bad smells need to waft away.

"Decimate" is a French word, and it means "to send .1BTC to Charlie Shrem"

In Charlie's own words "I broke the law and I broke it badly"....So why should I send him any money?
Nothing against Charlie, but IMO if you want to donate money, send it to Jean and Burt.

currency exchange license is different from money transmitter license as i understand it ... that's why some of the small time online btc places have that $1000 per day per customer limit , right ? (and why he was conducting what was considered a felony volume of currency conversion) ... in any case , he obviously did not have procedures in place to prevent bad actors from bypassing the legal limit , functionally looking the other way with inadequate identity verification ... but i was under the impression that he was , in addition to running his online exchange , conducting in person business , which was how he was popped in a sting yes ?
