It looks like powering these puppies might be difficult.  I came across this picture of the USB miner showing a port on the top of the card.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-87cSHvQfllI/UXeqlUbiP4I/AAAAAAAAAJQ/KgNkEvTXQtw/s1600/Fantastic+Development+ASICMiner+to+release+USB+ASIC+Bitcoin+mining+devices.png

Could this be used to power it or to test it?

Below is a link to the article that shows the USB card.  The article says it's a mockup, but other pictures show the card with a series of soldering point near the top of the card.

Just ship his last so us little guys have head start to mine a few bits!  Smiley

Make sure you have a hub to drive these!  As I and others have mentioned elsewhere, you don't want these plugged into a cheap chinese hub.  Instead, get an expensive chinese hub! Smiley

M

You are right about expensive and cheap, but why u put chinese? Don't you get that most of china products are low quality cause people want cheap things and companys go china to produce cheap things?
cheap = low quality, expensive = good quality. Or you think china is lower than your country? so why you here to watch chinese product? Isn't ASICMINER , AVALON from china? Yeah maybe to you BFL is better than this ones...

I like that people goes shop and say:       Oh it's made from china and it's so expensive, another side is much cheaper!
Someone says:      This one has better quality.
And he says:         I don't care , it's all the same thing made from china!

That's why companys keep going to china produce even more cheap.

A bit off topic... I put Chinese because the US government works with corporations and the Chinese government to exploit the people of China to produce just about everything.  It's very hard to find anything that isn't made in China.  I have nothing against the Chinese people, just the governments and corporations of the world that exploit them.

People want cheap junk because they of the declining value of fiat money.  (It's a tough lesson to learn you get what you pay for.) Why is it declining?  Governments and corporations.

Of course as I stated elsewhere... governments and corporations are not stand alone entities.  They are run by people.  Would you do better in a position of extreme power and influence?  A lack of morality stemming from a lack of godliness is the underlying cause of it all.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

but not sure if the port goes off too..if the ports stay on, that would be nice
Yeah...if it detects an overcurrent situation it's not going to let that device continue running. It has a lifetime warranty so you know they didn't build it poorly.

Yes you should.  Every cheap hub I looked at was limited to 2A, which is 3 erupters max.  I have 6, intend to get 1 or 2 more.
Friedcat said they were going to try to hit 500mA's with the new batch, but we'll have to see if they managed to do it.

If we have to go around looking for hubs without overcurrent protection, that would be bad.

Some hubs have 'over current' detection which may not be good for these

this hub is interesting in that if it detects over current the LED goes off..  but not sure if the port goes off too..if the ports stay on, that would be nice

"Port Status Indicators - Green LEDs indicate port status and over
current detection. When a device is connected to one of the ports, all
Green LEDs will illuminate. If an over current condition occurs, the LED
for that port will turn off, indicating a problem with that device."

side by side they may not fit?

True; some extenders may be in order, but I only plan on ramping up to 5 total, so the Amps should be good I think. (3 / .56 = 5.35 so that leaves me a little head room over 560 mA each).

would be nice to see this filled up and actually work!

How expensive?  What specs do I need?  I saw that this puts out 560 mA possibly, which is a little over spec for a single port, but if I keep numErupters * .56 < totalAmpsOfHub I should be fine right?

Yes you should.  Every cheap hub I looked at was limited to 2A, which is 3 erupters max.  I have 6, intend to get 1 or 2 more.  I only found one that meets my specs, and has great reviews.  Cost me $50 from Amazon.  Anything $20 or less had awful reviews and people saying it wouldn't work if you had more than one item plugged in that needed power.  And some say the fuse line was purposely shorted out to save money.

Definitely _not_ want you want for this.

And last thing I want is for these to arrive only to find out the cheap hub I got doesn't cut it.

M

This looked good to me; 3A, >400 reviews with 4.5 start avg.

You might also want to get some short usb extenders so they aren't heating up your hub to extreme temperatures.

I intend to have a box fan blowing on them.

Yantis has jumped in at the last moment with an additional 80 (yes, eighty) miners.
Methinks someone plans an ebay posting?
