That article is worthless sensationalism.  The basic logic there is that a guy got leukemia and he owns a miner, therefore the miner must have caused his leukemia.  By that logic, I got a cold and I own a miner, so my miner must have given me a cold.  There's no substance whatsoever there.  How many rig owners haven't gotten leukemia?

Aside from that, ASICs certainly do give off some electromagnetic (EM) radiation because any electric current flow generates an EM field.  But it's low-power, localized, and non-ionizing.  Not to mention that most if not all of it is likely blocked by the metal casing the chips are likely in.  The radiation from your cell phone is much more dangerous than anything emitted by an ASIC.

Check for FCC sticker if in US. You're probably "reasonably safe." If no FCC sticker and they sold to you in the US, try to accumulate and run as many as you can -- the lawsuit from your death will feed your family for generations even if the bitcoins won't. Think of it as hedging.

I think Tritium is the prophesied hydrogen economy of the future. It glows (indirectly) and it produces power for 20 years. $30,000 a gram it's worth today.

EDIT:
I was pleasantly surprised to find that I can buy nuclear powered lights for under $50 on ebay.

Hmm think this is just scaremongering, really cant see them emitting that much radiation. If you are that worried you could just stick the asic out in your garage.

Just wrap everything in tin foil and duct tape, that will stop the Gaussian field from generating.

Somebody has mentioned that ASICs emit dangerous levels of radiation. Can anybody confirm or deny this?
Nope, if your ASIC device isn't called like VVER-1000.

That blue core reminds me of how iron man made his energy source lol.

The radiation isn't as dangerous and the fumes that are emitted by the heated electronics.  You can smell the chemicals in the air if you walk into a room full of hot GPUs.  Those chemicals are known carcinogens.  One card mining probably won't kill you, 35 mining next to your bed 24/7 might be enough to trigger cancer.

I hope he was talking about non-ionizing radiation.

EDIT:

Have they started adding WiFi to the chips?

Yes, asic does emit radiation but not high enough for it to be dangerous. You can buy a radiation detector if you are really concern.

Looks like the power can be built right into the ASIC.

http://www.citylabs.net/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=20

"power for twenty years or more"

EDIT:

If ASICSs are already cranking out the radiation why not go for broke?

Also, if these guys are selling them on pre-order don't do it!

On a somewhat related topic I wonder how cost effective a small nuclear power source would be in powering ASICs.
If you are dead from radiation poisoning before the miner sends a share, not much.

You're exaggerating the dangers here. Over the course of a year say 100kW for a modestly sized ASIC farm really costs a lot of money. I'm sure there's a power useage level where nuclear is a viable option.
