No, I never said any such thing.I did say I needed "instructions from the mothership", which was simply the static IP address for which the machine was configured.
Once obtained -- as my review states -- you are able to access the box and set a root password. Standard OpenWRT behavior and configuration in that regard.
Perhaps by posting the best info I had I elicited your response, which will make it easier for other Avalon users in the future. The review at http://garzikrants.blogspot.com/2013/01/avalon-asic-miner-review.html is great.

Or to to prevent some scumbag to redirect ones brand new ASIC to his own pool!
You wouldn't intercept Bitcoin mining hardware and secretly program it to mine for your own pool.
You wouldn't pose as a courier and deliver it to his wife.
And then steal it back again after he posted a review of the unit.

On IRC, jgarzik went through something like this:
1. Worry about 230V/115V setting - found out PSU is auto switching
2. Plug in unit, fans come on really loud
3. Request help from the "mother ship," which probably means he was able to contact Yifu (BitSyncom) for instructions
4. Find out what IP the device got from his DHCP server
5. Type the IP into his browser, log in to the web interface

The power cord thing is typical when you order stuff from China. It's just a matter of taking the power cords from one of your current miners or an old Pentium or something.
As for the lack of instructions, I think that helps you "smuggle" it into the country. Or perhaps it could make it harder instead as you have to explain to your customs authorities what the hell this box is.

The power cord thing is typical when you order stuff from China. It's just a matter of taking the power cords from one of your current miners or an old Pentium or something.
As for the lack of instructions, I think that helps you "smuggle" it into the country. Or perhaps it could make it harder instead as you have to explain to your customs authorities what the hell this box is.

Avalon's aren't intended to be "ASICs for dummies". They're a niche product for techie people who don't need their hands held. Jeff had no problems getting it up and running without instructions.
