No matter how much protection you put in place, your device will still have a chance of being hacked, but overall it's best to be prepared to minimize the chances of getting hacked. Everyone has very important information on their personal devices that hackers can easily steal without your knowledge. Yes, if you use an public WiFi network your phone will be at risk of being hacked. Sometimes hackers set up fake WiFi networks that can access your device's data. It is because of our little carelessness that we give hackers an opportunity. Caution should be exercised when connecting to public WiFi networks.

I think that someone is supposed to avoid a public WiFi is someone who knows the nature of it's business, if you keep people's funds and have something that is important in your folders and emails that you don't want any person to know, that's only ways you can avoid using a public Internet, its easier for someone to penetrate into your document through internet you hook up to, my Facebook has been hacked before through hotspot of handsets, so I know very well that investing in cryptocurrency, using a public WiFi will not make someone to steal your bitcoin you invest, but what I know is that using WiFi to access some websites that's is not strong it can be easily be hacked.

OP is correct my friend crypto wallet was, drain because of this, she taught its safe since its a hotel wifi little did she know, it will expose everything, no security is safe once you get hack, always use a device that will seperate you from that network, if you are going to a hotel, or best not to use those network for security purpose or never open banks, emails etc, for security reason.

That's really sad, actually most people think that using an unknown wifi is not going to affect them in anyway, without knowing that scammers has different strategies/tactics that they use to achieve whatever they want. obviously scammers is really making everywhere not to be conducive for people anymore, this is why we also need to be careful in all aspects because they're using different method just to gain access towards our assets and other things, that is why we need to be security conscious so as to avoid being a victim to them.

What a loss for your friend and for sure this is devastating event especially it happen unexpectedly.

So for people to avoid such incident then much better for them to read this article since by you can read on how hackers can steal something from you https://www.techradar.com/vpn/ways-hackers-can-steal-your-data-on-public-wi-fi

For this we should avoid using any public WIFI especially if it comes to unknown sources. Don't get tempted when we see someone didn't put a password on their WIFI since provably its just a trap made by those hackers who want to catch and stole something from their victim.

Even public Wi-Fi with a password does not mean encryption takes place within the network nor does it make it safe. It is completely useless against man-in-the-middle attacks. If you are out use your phone's internet instead of public Wi-Fi. Or make an SSH tunnel to your home PC and verify that your PC's fingerprint is correct otherwise, it could be fake. Or like the OP, the easiest way is to avoid doing important stuff on Wi-Fi networks you don't know or can't trust to be completely untapped like open Wi-Fi.

Wifi is a technology that uses radio wave for high-speed internet connection which facilitates the transfer and exchange of data over the network. Information shared over a wifi network is very visible over the network. public wifi network, with or without security is only good for general activities and never for private transactions as information sent over such network can be intercepted by attackers or even the provider of the network if they are not reputable sources. Data intercepted can be used for unhealthy purposes.

Using free wifi networks can lead to lots of privacy leaks such as bank account compromising when you log in with your details over such networks, seed phrases and private keys interception and other financial and social media handles attacks. spywares and trojans can be installed and spread through public networks, as soon as attackers captures a device on that network, it can be used as a host to infect other devices connected to same network. You still need strong anti-virus software to stay safe and not get compromised even after using it for general activities.

Most people whose wallets are compromised on web3 are victims of public networks. Personal, Financial and corporate information are stolen by great margin over free networks as a competitor may offer you internet connection, stealing your data in the process, unknown to you that he/she was planted. Do all classified activities over networks you can trust.

I recently bumped on an ad advertising free wifi networks connection all over the world and the level of scam they may be presenting to uniformed and less suspecting individuals prompted me to creating this thread. I checked google play and saw a whole lot of them and this is a warning to you'll that trust blindly whatever you see on google and apple stores, I don't think they scrutinize everything there. lets all stay safe out there

You're not far from the fact Op. Years ago I got connected to a friend WiFi and he asked me if am I aware that I can gain access to someones Privacies if connected on the same WiFi? I said no. I was curious to learn about it but he said no he was not going to reach me otherwise I'd use it to do evil. Hmm. I wonder what made him exceptional on that cautious remark because if he hasn't been on it then I wondered why he had the knowledge knowing that he's not an official security detective detective personell. Then I wondered how many persons he has laured in compromising their private datas. Then I began to feel unsafe from connecting to untrust WiFis knowing that I've interpersonal documents in my devices which could be risky to loose protection if I'm victimized.
The worse of it's that the access would be gained without your notice. Indeed using the public internet provider seems threatening and unsecured.
