Seems like there is too much risk for this information to be leaked. It's not like you can know who will win a football match but the information is determined beforehand by voters, it is at a high risk to be abused. I wouldn't put it past anyone in FIFA considering how many scandals they have gone through in the past.

Ronaldo definitely deserves the award this year. Not just because he played well, he always plays well but there are other stuff going into this award that should be considered.

First of all, Juventus wasn't a bad team but they are much better right now with Ronaldo in it and Ronaldo even at his age is playing marvelously and becoming the best player wherever he goes shows how talented and skilled he is. Secondly, Real Madrid is so horrible this year, as soon as they have sent Ronaldo away they started to play horribly, they have been missing Ronaldo like crazy because all of their problems would have been gone if he was still there.

Lastly, Messi is an amazing player, he is truly the best player in the world but he is playing in Barcelona and Barcelona just beat Madrid 5-1 without Messi, so we can see Barcelona is much better than Madrid when both Messi and Ronaldo is not involved, Messi is literally playing in the better team.

Hence, Ronaldo deserves it much more than other players because of the impact he has on his teams.

It's not like he had a terrible year, won the league title with Barcelona, as well as the league cup, and he also won the european golden boot after scoring 34 goals in La Liga. My only 3 serious candidates right now would be :

Modrić
Ronaldo
Griezmann

in that order.

Messi isn't even close to touching the golden ball because he has pretty much almost nothing to his name for 2018.

Modrić : World Cup finalist, Champions League winner, and he already won best Europe, and World player.

Of course Ronaldo shares the Champions League title. And has had a great performance for the media backlash he's gotten the last few months.

As for Griezmann, well :

Won world cup.
Won Europa league.
Won vs R.M for Super cup.

It would only be fair imo, but yeah, just the fact that no one even mentioned him in this thread makes me feel bad for him.

Modric had great year with Real and Croatia, but I don't think he should win Ballon d'Or award. But if put my emotions and preferences aside - winner will be Cristiano or Modric.
And personally, I don't see players like Varane or Pogba in top 3.

I can't agree with you about Messi and Ronaldo. They are still top scorers in their teams, they make biggest and number of assists and they are still key players in national teams. I don't how you can say that they are already slowing down. Offcourse, not so many years left to br on the top, so now we just have enjoy watching football they're playing.

Let's not forget that this year was a World Cup year, so what about Varane, CL winner and World Cup winner, or Griezmann, Europa league winner, UEFA Super Cup winner and also World Cup winner? There's a high chance that one of these two will be in the top 3, could be Griezmann, Ronaldo, Modric? Though Modric has had a terrible start of the season with Real Madrid, far from being that amazing player from last season. Tbh, I think Griezmann will win the award.

This year it will be between Modric or Ronaldo. I personally prefer Ronaldo, has he was important in the campaign for UCL and in the world cup, but Modric also was a key player for both of these competitions. Maybe it can be a french player also, like Varane, because he won everything and played in most of the matches in this year. So for me it will be in this order: Ronaldo, Modric, Varane, where the three players would deserve this award, for the fact that they conquered something throughout the year. I left out Messi, because this awards nrmally see what the player won, and Messi ( individually he is a beast) only won Spanish competitions.

Yeah, as much as I think Messi's always been my man to watch for how long has it been now... 10 years? More? He's not as dazzling as he is gritty now. Weight of Barca, Argentina and the world on his shoulders. Maybe imagining it but he's always hunched these days. Voters will also be pressured (inwardly anyway) to pick a new face and there are few to have the fresh medals or credentials of Modric.

Otherwise, I really don't know who to pick. I prefer consistency even when out of form, but if not Messi or Ronaldo, who else?

In my personal opinion there're three candidates Ronaldo, Messi and Modric who're in the running. While it's obvious people will believe that Ronaldo or Messi should win I feel it's Modric who'll steal the thunder once more, and I'm sure Ronaldo is going to be very upset about it. I think Cristiano deserves it more than Leo Messi but that is just my personal opinion. I have rarely seen or hear Messi do so really good things this year with Barca in La Liga or in Champions League, I think Cristiano has done more with his new team.
