I think a lot of these altcoins offer improvements, but nothing on the order necessary to rival Bitcoin.  Litecoin, for example, offers a target blocktime of 2.5 minutes and the use of Scrypt which obviates the disruptive influence of GPU, FPGA, and ASIC mining.  These are both seemingly nice things in a cryptocurrency, and whatever supersedes Bitcoin may choose implement them, but there will need to be something radically new and innovative that compels consumers and merchants to actually convert their holdings, change wallets, etc.  Until then, why diffuse our efforts with all these carbon-copy altcoins when we have Bitcoin?  It's not perfect but it's the only one growing with enough momentum to have any kind of meaningful adoption anytime soon.  Alts like Freicoin, Namecoin, and Occcu are the exception, and as projects which are taking big strides in new directions I think there's every reason to be interested. In all honesty, all of the alt-coins seem like pump n dumps.

But to be fair, LTC shows the most promise for widespread use, simply because of it quick confirmations.

i guess XPR would count although the system works in a very different way, as far as I know it one of the few that are different from bitcoin, but your right there seems to be a controversy around it, I guess the best is to make our own mind ourselves and try it out. They hold frequent giveaways to introduce people to it.

As of right now I've been mining the hell out of PXC. They keep developing sites to use it at (poker, casino, escrow service, trade site coming) and it's had relatively little hype so it should hopefully be a slow climb instead of dump fest.

Most of them are just fork of the original bitcoin crytocurrency, although some offer slight modification to the rules they pretty much all operate in the same way and offer little advantage over bitcoin. Don't get me wrong, they are a good thing and are necessary step in the evolutions of cryptocurrencies as a whole. But I wouldn't go as far as saying that one is better than the other. I would say that some might suit your needs best than others.

Botnets and money retentive people farm the shit out of any altcoin that peeks its head above the 100% of BTC profitability mark.

Here's the order of coins:

1. Bitcoin
2. Litecoin
3. Namecoin
4. I0Coin/PPCoin (tie)
5. The odd chance that someone's cat steps on a bunch of keys and accidentally uploads a new altcoin chain
6. Every other altcoin.
