One of the best wallets you can get is an offline one or a cold wallet as well. These are the ones that will secure your money offline and it will be disconnected by possible thefts.

Depends on which coins you want to deal with, if you are using multiple crypto-currencies  then it is best to have a seperate wallet for each one like My Ether Wallet for ethereum, Mycellium wallet for Bitcoin and so on. Just make sure you handle your private keys securely.

read this amazing story. It's a huge thrill

https://www.wired.com/story/i-forgot-my-pin-an-epic-tale-of-losing-dollar30000-in-bitcoin/

[now spoilers, in case you haven't read yet]

the point to the story in this thread is, even a hardware wallet can have vulnerabilities. It's still very safe, as the glitch was fixed in the following Trezor update, and anyway it required the hacker to have physical access to the wallet. But they're not perfect.

So you you want to be really paranoid, use 2 wallets from different brands and put half of your coins in each. Since the softwares are independently developed, it's unlikely that both would be compromised at the same time

and use a fireproof safe for the seeds

hi,  so i have 'x' number of bytecoins online.   How do i save them to a desktop wallet or hardware wallet and does the wallet  have to support that coin. if yes.. do i have to exchange the bytecoins to another currency say Ethereum in the case of trezor h/w wallet? and then save them to the wallet.
cheers

Paper wallet is probably the safest one but it's only good if you want to store your coins for a long time. After that comes all the hardware wallets, personally I use a ledger nano s. If you don't want to pay for a hardware wallet then check out Jaxx or Exodus.

You have a choice of several that are safe. Here are a few of which you have to choose from. Trezor and Nano Ledger S are hardware wallets and are worth a certain amount. The Trezor is priced at 99 $ and Nano Ledger S 65 $. Then there are free wallets like Electrum, Coinbase, Jaxx and MyEtherWallet. For me there is a Trezor and I use MyEtherWallet.

I see the Trezor and ledger are swelling way above the MSRP.  Any idea where they go for at the above prices,
?  Thank you

Put electrum on a portable support (USB) , write down your seed on several piece of paper, remember it in your brain and you'll be fine. It is very safe and also very reliable to use.

electroneum maybe the best. blockchain also good to save your crypto. indeed, every wallet has various security, MEW secured by private key only. it is good to save your token and ETH. but, dont lose your private key, moreover to give it to another. you will lost everything that you put on your wallet.

Hardware wallet: Ledger nano s
it will be recommended, the price so little friendly. i think it's the best wallet to store your funds. but, keep secure your seeds.
Online wallet: blockchain
it is the best online wallet. it will be more secure if you use blockchain.
but i don't know what kinds of cryptocurrency that you want to save. i just suggest wallet above to store your bitcoin. for altcoin wallet, you may try coinomi.

Given that I follow basic internet safety and sanity and keep my antivirus up to date, how safe is a regular software wallet? I'm very new to this bitcoin business and has only a very modest amount invested into crypto currency.
It feels like a bit of an overkill to invest in a hardware wallet that will cost more than the content, at least at this point of time.

As said itself, Copay is a true bitcoin wallet, not an account service. Secure your personal funds with multiple signatures, or just one.

I suggest you to use Electrum. It is very easy to use even for newbies, you don't need to download the whole blockchain and its team always works hard to release updates. Also, it has its own subforum here on Bitcointalk where you can find all the support you need: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=98.0

I just heard about blockchain and I'm exploring myetherwallet purse, here we can contain many different types of tokens

Myetherwallet also called as MEW wallet is one of the best wallet as it also support eh ERC 20 tokens as well. Just keep the private keys safely and it should be all good. On the other hand block chain just support the BTC and ETH coins. Their security is also good and has the 2FA available which is very important for any wallet.

Any wallets are only as safe as you are. I would usually recommend keeping coins offline in a physical hardeare wallet like a trezor or ledger nano etc but sometimes these are not the best options for a newcommer to bitcoin. If you're a newbie with little knowledge I would actually recommend blockhain.info. You can either use their web wallet or download the app for your phone and it's basically like Paypal but for bitcoin. If you set up all the security features such as 2-factor authentification and a second password/pin it is very safe. In fact, there's actually more security features on the blockchain app/website than there is on either my paypal or online banking accounts. Just remember to write your recovery seed down and keep it safe so you can still restore your coins even if you forget your password etc but also take note of my very first sentence.

For me the best and safe wallet is coins.ph. Because coins.ph has been tested by many people and they trust it.

coins.ph is a great service, sure. But it definitely isn't a good place to store your bitcoin. Choose wallets where you have complete control over your private keys.
Here are some posts/articles that would hopefully let you decide against those online services:
Bitfinex hack - Wikipedia | The Inside Story of Mt. Gox, Bitcoin's $460 Million Disaster; Don't let history repeat itself.

To OP: Read: [General] Bitcoin Wallets - Which, what, why?; it should contain pretty much everything you need to know about wallets and the advantages/disadvantages.
