I think best alt coins for 2018 are waves,startis, Pura and ETH. Thease coins are best options for 2018 and waves, Startis and pura is in starting face and next year performance of these coins definitely gives huge returns.
I think the ethereum will get better in 2018. Besides bitcoin, a very good altcoin is ethereum in both trading and investing. plus 80% of all ico, they always use ethereum-based coins, and that makes the ethereum even better.
On my number one spot would be bitcoin, next is bitcoin cash, on my third list would be ethereum. When it comes to popularity these 3 coins are the most commonly use by others.
My choice is BTC, ETH, XRP + MONERO for sure. And I am thinking about several others too.
Plus now, because of such enormous volatility of BTC and appearing of BTG I thinking about these two too..
Why BTC? BTC is a king, a father and a mother of all coins. It will raise for sure.

Everything will depend on capitalization and the belief of people into a certain cryptocurrency. Ethereum is strongly supported, and this project is great; Vitalik Buterin wants to strengthen the position of ETH. Thus, I thinkclose to January we’ll see that ETH is really the right crypto to deal with.
Spectre and Stuffgogo are sleeping giants right now (one in ico phase other is finished) Their teams are quite fine and I believe products are going to be great. I plan to get some and hold.
My picks would be still BTC, ETH, Waves (which I hold) and IOTA , Shift (which I don't). I like SONM as well but it may take it a while for it to rise up.

From the popularity and interest of most investors, the best coins remain owned by Bitcoin until any year I guess. But it doesn't rule out the coins under Bitcoin will following the footsteps of Bitcoin too, they would also showing the best side on the developments of its price. And I think it looks like the best coins that still can giving me a profits on investing I still believe in Ethereum, BitcoinCash, Ripple and Litecoin from the all of Altcoins.
For 2018 my favorite altcoins to hold are:
Electroneum - I know current price is around 3 cents but i think it will go as high as $1 on 2018.
Ethereum - I thinks the price of this coin is cheap, with all the projects they have there is no way that the price will increase in the near future.
Litecoin - This coin was ignored for a long time but this is one of the most stable coins in the market, if the price do not rise at least i do not see any price dip as well.

I predict 2018 would be the year of Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum and of course for Bitcoin as well.

Ethereum and NEM I guess this two will become a big hit in 2018. Their market looks good this year and more investors are looking on it as a good asset to hold especially ethereum which gives a high value appreciation a weeks ago this may signal that it can even grow much higher in the future.
I would still believe in bcc and btg because even if they say it was just hyped, it is not easy to do that. I believe there are more and more miners in those fork coins. Even if slowly drops, its better to buy 1st then trade it later.
The best coin in what way? volume, price, price movement or what, You can see it at coinmarketcap.com. Best coin in my opinion first is bitcoin, ethereum, bitcoin cash, zcoin and zcash for trading.

BCH and BTC are my predictions for 2018. Many people can realize the growth of BTC and BCH in last week. I believe that they continue increasing in 2018.
I am not sure bitcoin cash will be increase, the price is high yesterday because a effect the hardfork
and the price is down today.
