seriously though, in absolute % terms, coins with tiny market caps are gonna give the best returns. but they're longshots and lots of them will never go anywhere. if you want to make consistent (but smaller) profits, you should probably stick to bitcoin.

Pretty obvious that it's BTC/USD pair. Just look at the daily trading volumes across all platform and you will see the sheer amount of Bitcoin moving in/out. As for maximum profit, there's a lot of factors (1) depends on your capital (2) depends on your trading experience. But if you're looking for alts that can give you 10x - 100x profits (small capital but huge profit), I doubt that you can find because currently altcoin market is crypto winter. And if you are really new in the market, I advise you to start with small capital that you can afford to lose and play the market today and see how it goes for you.

I've always found BTC best to trade for my strategies; I've never really had great luck trading alts overall, though I've also mainly been trading primarily BTC/USD pairs or the XBTUSD pairs and XBT futures on Bitmex for quite a long time. I would stick with coins that have very liquid markets like BTC or ETH. Technical analysis gets less and less effective as you move down into lower volume coins, which are more prone to unpredictable pumps and dumps.
