I think the best sci-fi is The Matrix and Independence Day.

Mars attacks is 100x better than independence day

Agreed, and I'd say Mars Attacks is probably better than a lot of the other movies mentioned in the thread so far, though it's kind of an unfair comparison; it's a comedy after all, not a sci-fi movie.

transcendence

I have to admit I haven't seen Transcendence yet, but both the plot summary, and the votes and reviews on imdb aren't that great. Is the movie really worth the 2 hours? Smiley

I think its worth it. If you like science fiction this is for you. The movie presented what would happen if singularity is achieve. So many advance ideas that I'm sure will be possible in the near future. You can download it on piratebay.se or in kickass.to, dvdrip is already available.

The Terminal Man.

I have never seen it but I want to.

I found Pi good, even though it isn't really Sci-fi and it's black and white (but it is made in the 80's)

Edge of Tomorrow was excellent, fun, and on par with Oblivion. Both were great!

For a movie, I would go with Avatar (although the plot could have been less predictable) or maybe one of the Star Trek or Star Wars movies.  I loved Star Trek: Into Darkness.  The role reversal between Kirk and Spock compared with Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn was fantastic!

If you're looking for a series, then I second Babylon 5.  It takes some time to get into, but it's the best written sci-fi series I've seen.  The storyline is absolutely amazing with lots of twists and turns that aren't easy to predict.

Forgot to add  The Day The Earth Stood Still.  The new one (2008) is more visually thrilling, but the older one is done better.

Grab a book, the best Science Fiction is written in books. I recommend anything by Peter F. Hamilton as a start (but there are so many more so feel free to completely ignore my specific advice).

Night's Dawn trilogy - a wild look at possession of people in the far future...every space fairing species knows about it but no-one talks about it.

Overall, a great sci-fi opera writer, one of the best.

Old school sci-fi is the best. Much less cgi then now and better movies.

Try anything from that time.

The Abyss is a classic in every sense of the word for sci-fi.  Well written and decently acted.  Right up there with 2001.
