This will go around the games auto loader so it does not update to the games "official server". Make sure you read the warning about the loader and scan it if you need to. Pick Lucky7 and log in!
The downloaded zip does not contain a file named BTconquerplay.exe, what do?

No I zipped the game folder all you have to do is unzip it and click BTCconquer.exe. The only emulator it involves is spoofing the updater in the game.
So basically, install a WIndows emulator, or create a virtual machine buy a copy of Windows, install Windows in the virtual machine?
Sounds a bit too resource-heavy (and expensive too for that matter), oh well.

Does one play directly in the browser, or download binaries of a client for one's platform (e.g. Fedora Core 16 Linux), or compile a client from source for one's platform or what?

You should not need to confirm, it auto confirms you can use a fake email or whatever. I have to get my partner to code the mail box for it.
