What is the single best threat to bitcoin of the alternative currencies?? peercoin? primecoin? quarckcoin? I don't think it is litecoin because it is just a clone...

None, only threads are outside cryptoworld like PayPal freezing acounts if you sell bitcoins/miners or you have store accepting both PayPal and Bitcoin

ppcoin and xpm are decent alt coins that have interesting features over bitcoin but they are not a threat whatsoever. No alt coin is even close to bitcoin in terms of the developers backing them up.

Actually, it's GoldCoin™! And it's still cheap to buy unlike Litecoin.

The biggest threat to Bitcoin is speculation. Because of the buy-bitcoin-to-get-rich mania that is now developing, Bitcoin is heading for a huge bubble. Tens, if not hundreds, of billions of dollars will be lost by speculators. If the bursting of that bubble doesn't kill Bitcoin, nothing will.

Only if there is crash by more than 99% on all major exchanges. We saw 66-90% crashes and Bitcoin survived.

Yes, I agree with you. However, it's not correct to say dollar will be lost. It just goes from one pocket to another pocket. The problem is when bubble pops, it goes from majority of new comers to small number of early adapters.

none of the alts are really threats to bitcoin. none of them are innovative. ripple is quite an innovation, but it is not currency, and likely complements bitcoin quite well.

in my opinion, a cracking attack or the miners dictatorship.

Pool server dictatorship, almost no one solo mine anymore...

I don't think other coins are threats, more like backups in case Bitcoin would fail of other reasons.

If Bitcoin would fail all other alt coins would fail as well. SHA256 is much more studied for possible vulnerabilities than Scrypt

That is not necessarily true, depends on the reason of Bitcoin failing.

I wouldnt call it a threat but quark might make some progress.

It is nothing more than one of many altcoins. You could just as well call litecoin or peercoin a treat.

I don't think any of them are currently threats. Just look at the price jump between BTC and LTC.

Threat? I think it already exists. It needs to be easier and safer for both the buyer and seller to exchange coins for fiat. Not that it's not possible to do on many different exchanges or in person on local bitcoins. However, your normal everyday person does not want to send a bunch of personal documents etc... to an exchange just so they can make transactions. It'd be cool if they setup some sort of paypal-esque system, where you can confirm transactions off the block chain so the buyer cannot retract a payment.
