What are the benefits of using a vpn?
Simple question, but why not just use your own internet?
I know you can use it for region restricted content, but what else?

If you just want to be anonymous. I used to use a VPN with Skype when Skype resolvers were a huge thing, just to refrain from using my real one and getting shot to the moon. Also used to use it on games, forums, etc, in case I didn't want to use Tor. VPNs are also big when you get to the White/Grey/Black hat market.

The software posted is well known. Just do a little Google search, no need to worry 
And if you don't trust BiPolarBob, just download something else there are enough VPN programs available.

BUT it's not even needed. You can use OpenVPN too.

That's true - anyone tunneling through a VPN (these or others) can visit something like http://iplocation.net to see which datacenter the server is in.
That is why using just one provider is a risk, better to do a VPN chain I think.
