Just like Bitcoin was launched by satoshi in 2008-09 as new financial system, somebody in future may come up with another idea and we all start following that and abandon bitcoin along with other crypto. That's just one possibility for 2140, we all wont be here 2140 but lets post with hope that this forum will be there in 2140.
Sorry but i don't think Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies will just gone like that and people will abandoned because new one comes out?there
might be another one but nothing can make difference from Bitcoin as this is a currency back by technology
and not just some amount to be spent.

just like banks, why they are staying even there are so many online sort of transactions?there  are paypal, paymaya,Bitcoin and other
form for payment yet Banks still lives and making money from the users.

if i am to support your position?maybe not to abandoned Bitcoin though i
doubt that i am still alive and active that year.

that was 120 years from now so if you will still be alive by that time you cant still use your gadgets and prolly be lying on the bed only due to weakness caused by aging or some health issues but lets not talk about the future shall we . what more important is today   . btc , crypto and blockchain are lively  and will be more lively in the next few weeks and months . after the creation of btc , few years later many simillar inventions showed up but look at btc now . still the one that is in favored the most

It's always interesting to talk about the future of bitcoin, because many people believe that in the future bitcoin can become a global currency.
In my opinion bitcoin in 2140 which is all bitcoin are mined, which definitely makes the price of bitcoin more expensive and also the price
more stable. And what is interesting is that all major merchants will accept payments with bitcoin. If that is indeed the case, I can't wait for it.

The first thing is - I will not live until 2140! It really feels bad to wish I could go see, but in no way is it possible. I think when Bitcoin mining is over, Bitcoin could be another system launch, and the price will skyrocket. I think if we look at some reports, we can see that thousands of new customers are entering the era with Bitcoin every day. So imagine what Bitcoin users will look like in 2140.

Year 2140 - I don't know if any of us here will still be alive at that time. But I am thinking that maybe, another powerful cryptocurrency will be born and bitcoin will be obsolete at that time. We know that bitcoin has a lot of shortcomings when it comes to speed and transaction fees, so something will be born that people can't resist. Although there are so many alts that were created to replace bitcoin but up until now, no one can beat the popularity of bitcoin. So after 2140, there will be so much things  that will happen and technology will be advanced that cryptocurrencies might not be in at that time.

I have read a ppst by Satoshi which was something like "In future, BTC will either be huge expensive that people can never imagine, or it will just die." I also think that way. If BTC will not become so expensive in future, miners will not just maintain the network as charity. However, we are talking about more than 100 years and I doubt BTC would exist such long times.

It looks certain that Bitcoin will be more expensive in the future, because of its deflationary model. For instance, fees per transaction have been on the rise after the third halving. This way, miners are able to "compensate" their losses with a reduced block reward. While it's good for them, it certainly isn't good for everyday users like you and me. If this keeps up, I believe that Bitcoin will be more used as a store of value than just a digital currency for daily payments. Of course, there's the Lightning Network but adoption is very low these days. Even with the benefits of the LN, Bitcoin would need to increase its block size capacity to be able to process more TPS. The LN is limited to Bitcoin's block size too, as opens or closes channels on-chain.

Still though, a lot of things could happen by 2140. You and I won't be able to live up to that point, but future generations will. If development is on-going, I'd bet that Bitcoin would've been scalable and stronger by then. I don't think it'll die easily as it has become too popular in the mainstream world. The pioneer cryptocurrency could simply become Gold's successor, as people use it as a safe-haven asset in times of turmoil. As long as decentralization is put first above all else, Bitcoin will be able to last far beyond 2140. Just my thoughts Grin

To be honest, even I'm not sure I will live in that year so I would never be able to imagine the growth of bitcoin in 2140, even though bitcoin is able to continue to grow and become something that is very useful and sought for many transactions in real life I'm still not sure bitcoin will persisted in 2140 because every technology will continue to evolve every time which led to a major transition that may occur to an era that is more intense than the digital era as it is today.

While we still have a very long way to go for this to happen, it's great to imagine how the future of Bitcoin and crypto will be after a century since their inception. I'm curious to know what do you think Bitcoin's future will be after 2140? Your input will be greatly appreciated. Smiley
That's a wish that is too far away, I don't think is very important because before that "possibility" is reached in 100 years, I think we will disappear first from the earth. We know that it is very rare now for humans to be more than 100 years old. So it's best, we try our best to benefit from the offers available on bitcoin at this time, don't daydream too far. By studying as well as possible to get a profit that is enough for me to be able to enjoy this progress. I think, in the next few decades the adoption of BTC will increase, of course, it will increase its value.

I think you should be able to see from the basis of bitcoin and the purpose of bitcoin from what I know is that bitcoin is created to create an exchange value that cannot be controlled by anyone and has a very limited supply limit and is widely used for various platforms to make transactions digital, while life in the digital world will always evolve so in my opinion the year you mentioned that the price of bitcoin will be very expensive because it is very difficult to get bitcoin and more and more are using bitcoin.

I don't think too much about what will happen with bitcoin after the year 2140 because I don't know what will happen with bitcoin. We will have so many predictions about what will happen in that year, but we still don't know for sure because all of us will not live until that year. Maybe we can give a message to our children, grandchildren to watch what will happen with bitcoin, so they can prepare before that time comes. But I could only predict that bitcoin at that time will be too expensive than today, and people will want to hold bitcoin because bitcoin is worth for them. But who knows the truth?

If we talk about the future there will be many possibilities. Bitcoin become scarce and it will make its price increase, I can't predict how its price later but if we see the increase price per halving event the price should increase for more than 1 million per 1 BTC. But if we talk the other possibilities like the demand for bitcoin is less and the miners will leaving it because its cost that expansive I guess bitcoin will just a history. The people will sell all their bitcoin until its price goes to zero. As for the miners side, I'll answer it will be depend on bitcoin's price itself, the miner will still mining bitcoin if they feel they still make a profit of it and otherwise.

I would imagine that by that time, we wouldn't be saying that Bitcoin is worth x Dollars, instead we'd be saying that a Dollar is worth x% of a Bitcoin. There is no way, surely, that over a hundred years from now we'll still be using fiat as the primary measurement of value. Fiat looks hopelessly antiquated now, in 2020. We are moving into an interconnected digitised world at breakneck speed. In 2140, fiat will be irrelevant, if even still exists.

By the year 2140,all currencies(both fiat and crypto) will become obsolete and people will have robot slaves, that do everything for them and produce all the things people need.Markets and the economic theories of supply and demand will be forgotten.People will colonize other planets(or maybe Mars only).
Quantum computers will be a thing(there might be computers that are even more powerful than quantum computers),so Bitcoin won't exist. There's no point of fantasizing about what happens to Bitcoin in 2140.

2140? Oh noh! ::)It's more than 100 years or 120 years to be exact from now and i think there is no people from this year are still alive on the year. But maybe Bitcoin is very valuable at that time. Miners already mined all bitcoin and only small supply of bitcoin will circulate in crypto space. Anyway,It's really difficult to imagine what will be the bitcoin after 100 years.

Great topic OP.

I think in the year 2140 the bitcoin will be managed with satoshis, let me explain it. Miners fees with being really small, something like (0.0000001)...it will be a small amount in bitcoin, but a nice amount in dollars. And this will be because with all the lost coins the total of circulating bitcoins will be low.

Is just my theory for that year.

Have you ever wondered how the future of crypto land will be once all Bitcoin are mined by 2140?
Are we really waiting for Bitcoin in 2140 at a price of $ 1 million, it did not occur to me and never dreamed that it would reach that year.

If it is currently lacking in 2020-2140, then the age we must have in 2140 is 120 years from now.
OP, how can you think about it? You can have the opportunity to mine in Bitcoin that year.
Even if you have the chance to live in 2140, I guarantee you will not be able to get to know Crypto any more, and also you will no longer be able to operate your laptop again, you are very senile.
At that time you will no longer know the name of the internet and related to the world, vanished.

The generation has to born yet which will be witness of our expectations about Bitcoin anyways I believe Bitcoin will be still on top at that time, not sure about how much market capitalization will be but it may be beyond from our expectations the adoption and popularity of Bitcoin indicates that its future is going to be far long.

Bitcoin will have a really good future, if only the government is not going to do anything very stupid. If the government is not going to start looking for ways to take it down then it's going to be really good. I have been seeing a lot of people talking about Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC) and I'm not really in support of these, because I don't want the government to create something that will give them a reason to fight against decentralized cryptocurrencies. They might want people to only make use of centralized exchanges and not the ones that are decentralized.

OP is talking about $1M for one bitcoin in 2140 whereas McAffe kind of people are speculating the same level of value for bitcoin within this year or at lest within this decade. So much of differences. When people are having confident about reaching $1M then it will be reached quicker than expected so, $1m may possible at any time soon.

There are bunch of factors that have different weighted effects on bitcoin in the future:
  • How many percent of bitcoins unmoved over consecutive years (like 10 years, 20 years)? They are mostly lost.
  • The level of bitcoin adoption that discloses via its median of total transaction counts per block and median of weekly empty blocks
  • The transaction fees (how high/low & stable will be?)
  • The general growth of crypto industry
  • etc.

[1] This figure is very important because it helps us knowing how many bitcoin potentially lost forever. It plays as an unofficial deflation for bitcoin's touchable total supply.
[2] See: BTC empty blocks (2009 - 5 May 2020): miners, size, daily, monthly, yearly stats. For the first part of point [2], you can get it on glassnode.com (click on the link to see the chart)
[3] For transaction fees, there are 2 main factors: cheap/ expensive; and stability. If in the future, there will be improvements on the Bitcoin protocol to make its transaction fees cheap (most of time, it is cheap) and more stably cheap, we will see more massive adoption and real usages of bitcoin in daily life.
[4] I do believe that we will be early witnesses for one of the greatest revolution in human history and human civilization.

We will never know what will happen to bitcoin in 2140. There is a possibility that bitcoin will be replaced by a technology
more sophisticated, but if bitcoin turns out to still exist I agree the price will be very expensive. Besides, it's possible in 2140
I have died, so I can no longer see bitcoin in 2140. So I prefer to predict bitcoin for 5-10 years from now.
