"What's in a name? that which we call a rose. By any other name would smell as sweet"

Why so much discussion about what bitcoin should be called? What matter is what it is

Imagine we called a rose an ass though - "awww, these asses smell great hon!"

I get your/Shakespeare's point, but if I'm describing it to someone for the first time:

"Cryptocurrency" for a) people familiar with math/tech/etc. that may have an idea of what cryptography is.
b) people I think may not understand right away but might be intrigued solely based on the sound of "crypto".
"Digital currency" for people who aren't a or b, or that I don't know well - at least to start with some frame of reference.

Distributed crypto-currency. "Distributed" is important to be clear that there is no central government or organisation backing the currency, but is usually inferred.

I prefere digital. Everyone knows what "digital" is (no they actualy do not know but they think they do so it's cool).
It's not specific, though. A private currency like Amazon Coins is digital.

Crypto is too much "secret"
"Crypto" is accurate. Being based on cryptography is one of the defining attributes of this kind of currency. And words like "secret" or "private" aren't necessarily bad.

Your question is really asking us to define what the definition of "is" is. Regardless of if you define bitcoin as a digital currency, as a crypto currency or as anything else, as long as you understand the underlying fundamentals of how bitcoin operates you will be set Smiley

Bitcoin is NOT 'VIRTUAL' currency. That does matter. But how to name it - 'digital' or 'crypto' currency - it's up to you

virtual:
gives the mindset that its fake, EG virtual reality=fake reality

digital:
mindset that its computer based, but doesnt limit it away from other types of digital currency EG FIAT online bank, facebook credits

cryptographic currency:
describes bitcoin but doesnt roll off the tongue

crypto-currency:
mindset that its 'cryptic' (mysterious, puzzling, secretive)

crypto:
mindset that its 'cryptic' (mysterious, puzzling, secretive), but rolls off the tongue

coin:
mindset that its physical

professionally i prefer cryptographic currency, but you have never seen me say on these forums, where i try to stick to laymans. so i say crypto-currency, or crypto.

But isn't it easier just to say 'crypto' and not 'digital currency' ?
2 syllables vs 6 syllables is a wide gap( almost the gap between Brazil and Germany !).

Crypto seems to roll off the tongue a bit better ?

And makes you sound like a retard trying to be technical.
