It's not that the banks need to know, it's just that there isn't a mechanism in place to exchange directly from GBP to BTC. Everything I've seen is from USD or EUR to BTC. So us Brits have to suffer the pain of 2 exchange fees, or do an international bank transfer which negates any profit we might otherwise make.  Sad

If anyone has a better way, please let me know!

Where in the world are you?

I'm in the UK and it's a pain trying to buy BTC as none of the banks to my knowledge even acknowledge BTC's existence! FWIW, I found an article suggesting using www.virwox.com to exchange £ (paid through paypal) to Linden $, then Linden $ to BTC. Not an elegant solution, and quite costly with the fees (Paypal + 2 exchange fees) but it worked straight away.

There's small limits to begin with, but it might be what you're looking for.

Of course, if anyone else knows a better way, please let me know!

I am curious as to find out why is it so difficult to buy coins there in england? why does the bank need to know you are buying bitcoins?

Im in the US and cant seem to find a good exchange for cash deposit.  Ill check btc-e though thanks guys!

I use coinbase... works... as long as they have enough bitcoins

mtgox deposits are fast via wire transfers.

mtgox.com has bank transfer.

it works.

I use https://coinbase.com in the us to cash out bitcoins to my bank account.  Very low fee and it posts usually 3 days or so to my account, pretty fast.  I use BTC-E for trading, put everything in BTC and send that over to coinbase.

Plus the BTC price on coinbase is usually a bit higher than it is on BTC-E so nice little bonus there.

definitely btc-e, but its mostly about finding an exchange that trades your currency. In Australia, there are bitpiggy and bitinnovate, both are reliable.

Hey all im stuck in this newbie forum for now hoping to get out.  Does anyone know of any bitcoin exchanges with reasonable fees?  Bitinstants fees seem a little high recently.  Ive used exchanges such as bitfloor and ziggap when they were still around but im at a loss for a source of coins now.  Thanks in advance for the help!
