I consider assassination markets an urban legend, I mean even the SR guy only could find a fed who posed as hitman ... or did I miss some story here?
I wish it was movie stuff.  Undecided

Yet what we see from the assassination Tor site is a small list of names with fairly low amounts of bitcoin pledged and apparently not a single prior prediction paid out.

I also saw that link appear several times in the many recent threads regarding Mark Karpeles, and despite the number of people wishing him harm or death clearly his name has not yet been added.

So from those facts I come to the conclusion that very few people take that site seriously enough to pledge funds and no one takes it seriously enough to make a prediction come true. i.e. it doesn't disprove the statement that assassination markets are an urban legend.

I think you are right that there is little interest in this compared to how much talk there is. However, the system does work in theory and it will only take one hit to draw serious regulation. It could easily lead to a total tracking of all coins; even an outright ban. Almost nobody wants that now.

Thanks for the links and the discussion. Just to make this thread complete here's a relevant article:
http://www.dailydot.com/news/dread-pirate-roberts-silk-road-second-murder-plot/

And I still think assasination markets are NOT real.

That would be the ultimate depressant - to spend your entire work day searching for child porn. Maybe this is a trick to see which guys apply for those jobs, so the police can investigate them.

Your posts never make any sense at all.

You wouldn't believe how much I loled at this comment, especially after reading previous posts of his.

child porn is fun.  it emphasizes fun over sex.  which is fun!

if it's truly bad it wouldn't be worth any money now would it be?

Well that could be spun in different ways.  If its bad then general populace will stay away from it and not give it value.  If its bad and may bring much harm, then you may find bad people may pay a decent amount for this tool.

Bad things are done with money, not that money is a a bad thing.  It just means that if the money is successful enough it will be used for what it is, as a tool.  Good or bad intentions.  Lets not forget that usd has been historically used for shady dealings.  Bitcoin will also be used for such dealings.  There is no viable way to stop 100% of the bad actors from using crypto or fiat to do bad things.

You can find out more for yourself at bitcoinfoundation.org .

This, along with assassination markets and ransom-ware, are serious issues. The kind of things that will scare soccer moms and allow a pretext to be created by those who would like to see bitcoin go away.

Thank you. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find that much on the topic of child pornography and bitcoin on the bitcoinfoundation website. There are one or two discussions in the forum.

In the thread https://bitcoinfoundation.org/forum/index.php?/topic/185-the-virtual-economy-potential-perplexities-and-promises/ Joel Dalais suggests to set up a task force that in cooperation with Bitcoin exchanges would support authorities in tracking down the real persons behind a transaction related to child porn.

Was this ever implemented? Wouldn't a shared user database between the different exchanges expose an even bigger security risk than just trusting one exchange with your personal details which in some cases also include passport or idcard copies?

The first link is to Jim Bell's original idea. Below that is a bitcoin implementation. This is a problem without a solution so far.

Anyone who clicks on those links will be known to the NSA as being interested in assassination markets.
(Safety in numbers?) If everyone clicks, they probably will not investigate all of us...

Just read this article: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/technology/jamiebartlett/100012608/could-a-crypto-currency-like-bitcoin-help-child-pornographers-evade-police/. Quote: "But the Bitcoin Foundation has agreed to work with the Gates Foundation to try improve methods of stopping child exploitation, which is welcome."

Does anybody know, what these methods are the Bitcoin foundation is improving in order to stop the increasing number of transactions done in the context of distributing child pornography? What actions did they take so far? To my (limited) knowledge, any action that would prevent the current widespread usage of Bitcoin for purchases of child pornography would also directly undermine the anonymity of Bitcoin which is often seen as the one big advantage over common online payment systems. Does anybody have more information on this matter?

BTC doesn't have anonymity (by default), so the association with "really bad things" is often totally wrong.

They should stop linking bitcoin directly to all kind of criminality. Instead, put the real bad asses to jail. If you destroy the source, all other indirect measures are not needed anymore. This applies for all kind of currencies in my opinion

Agree, but probably they want to make profit from that too.

/thread

In all seriousness though the people attacking Bitcoin are coming up with just about any kind of bullshit to scare people away from it, yes it's a bad thing, but they should be going after the people who do this not the currency itself.
